turbine wheel damage...how bad?

2 Attachment(s)
So I opened up my small 16g today to prep for rebuilding it tomorrow. I bought it used, and the guy from whom I bought it assured me that aside from being old, it was in great shape with nothing wrong with it.

Now I find this. (See attached pictures)

How bad do you think this is? Would it be terrible to reuse that turbine wheel? If I did find a replacement (if you have one, let me know), would mating the compressor wheel I have currently then need a professional balance? Also, should I e-mail and "complain" to the guy I bought it from?

Thanks everybody.

F20turbo 12-01-2006 07:27 PM

yeah, get your money back man. Thats not right. You would have to replace the whole wheel and shaft and then have it reblanaced with your current compressor wheel. regardless, just get your money back...unless it was DIRT cheap.

Braineack 12-01-2006 07:29 PM

looks like someone dropped it.

Atlanta93LE 12-01-2006 07:31 PM

I'd think maybe it was dropped, but it's like that all the way around (but you can only see it on part in the picture, as the basksides look better).

Fritch 12-01-2006 07:31 PM

ouch, not looking good man

Atlanta93LE 12-01-2006 08:12 PM

How much does balancing normally cost?

Almost looks like the EGT's were WAY up there and burned it off. Did he say what happened to the motor?

Atlanta93LE 12-01-2006 08:18 PM

Nope. Said he totalled the car and was just selling off parts. I e-mailed him the pictures, but we'll see if he ever responds.

Braineack 12-01-2006 08:32 PM

im sure you could still at least get a new turbine. it just stinks.

Atlanta93LE 12-01-2006 08:34 PM

I've been looking at new turbines, and it looks like they cost $170-200! For that price, might as well find a blown 14b and use the turbine from it.

adbradley 12-01-2006 09:44 PM

yeah, getting a turbine from a 14b is the way to go if u dont get your money back from that asshole, that sux man!

I had the same kinda thing happen with a 13g, guy told me the same crap.. i get it, and the damn center section was about to fall out of it, the turbine housing was cracked so bad.

cjernigan 12-01-2006 10:03 PM

Man that blows. Balancing at my local turbo shop in Nashville cost right anywhere from $30- $35. Get your money back for sure if you can then go looking for used parts. You could call turbo shops and see if they have anything used laying around. Like Gpop for example. Never know, you might get lucky.

getsidewaysd1 12-02-2006 07:18 AM

Couldn't you just file down and blend the blades?

bripab007 12-02-2006 07:59 AM

Wow...that's pretty effing bad.

Atlanta93LE 12-02-2006 09:16 AM

what it SHOULD look like

I don't think this thing can be rapaired, getsideways, as it is supposed to look like this:

http://www.turbochargers.com/store/images/twtd05h.JPG

Clearly, I'm missing a fairly significant chunk of each fin.

You know, timing is great. I finally have time to start moving forward, and I find this. Oh well, shit happens I guess.

getsidewaysd1 12-02-2006 09:29 AM

Ehhhhh........oh well. 14b's are cheap anyways.

that is a very bad idea...lol:nono:

getsidewaysd1 12-02-2006 10:41 AM

Really? I actualy know nothing about it. I just know the mechs do it all the time on our F/A-18's. But I'm shure its compleatly different.

cheap 14b

adbradley 12-02-2006 11:03 AM

here is a 16g that looks promising as well, and comes with some goodies you can sell to me :) If you get a used 14b or 16g that comes with extras, let me know, i will purchase them from you

i dont think you can ever balance that, and eventually it will destroy your turbo its fully reversible loading that keeps the shaft from destroy its self in fatigue with that kind of impalance your bearings will shit and I would bet eventually the shaft would fail.

it would ruin the balance of the wheel and throw it all off. I wish it was that easy but alas it is not:)

samnavy 12-02-2006 02:17 PM

Damn, I made a good post earlier in this thread and it doesn't show... to recap:

Yes, that turbine is damaged beyond usability. In fact, if it came off a running car, I don't see how the PO could think his turbo was running right. With that amount of damage to the turbine, I would suspect that blow-by of exhaust gas around the missing sections of blade would be enough to inhibit spool and make serious dents in the powerband.
That's one reason you simply can't file the blades down... they need the whole surface of the blade to fit almost to the edge of the turbine wall so gas spools the wheel instead of blowing by the gap.

You also can't bend the blades. Any time you bend a piece of metal like that, you stress it (microscopic fractures etc...) and affect it's strength properties (or something really cool like that). You probably can't bend it anyway...it'll just fracture.

With that much metal missing, the turbine would be crazily off balance... enough to wobble the CHRA guts to the point that a rebuild is in order as well, even if you did manage to find a new shaft and turbine wheel.

Getsideways, don't tell anybody that your mechs are taking files to turbine blades... I'm pretty sure that's a IM job... and a few grams of metal to smooth out a fod nick on a 2foot long blade won't effect the balance as much as on a 1inch wide blade.

I hope you used Paypal or the guy is honorable.

Atlanta93LE 12-02-2006 02:32 PM

I e-mailed him last night. How long should I give him to response before opening a dispute with Paypal? I'm thinking if I don't hear from him by tomorrow morning then I will open a formal dispute. Not that that will do much...my last claim with an eBay company was made on 9/26, and it is still "awaiting response from seller," who is no longer a registered user. None of this stuff would happen if I had money to do this right ;)

samnavy 12-02-2006 02:56 PM

Some people don't check their emails on the weekends... give him until Monday evening (10pm or so his time) and then open a dispute. Once you have opened a dispute, make sure all your communication happens there. Don't spread the issue over email/eBay/and the resolution center. Did you buy it on eBay... the rules for disputes are different for eBay and non-eBay Paypal disputes.

For the time being, don't do anything to the turbo. You've taken pictures, now put it back in the box and don't touch it. If the guy gives you a hassle about a refund, you'll need to take the turbo to a third party verifier and want it to be as close to how it came as possible. Right now, I'd print out and make electronic backups of every piece of communication you had with him... including the original ad, any emails, addresses or phone numbers, shipping timelines, etc...

You want to settle for nothing less than a full refund and a return of the product with the seller to pay your cost to ship it back to him. Be professional in your communication and think carefully about how you're going to handle the dispute specifics... remember, there is nothing personal with Paypal, it's a business and they're in it for the money. They don't care about you or the seller, they just want their cut. Emotion and reason won't work, you've gotta have proof of everything in writing or electronically.

And I wouldn't wait for this to be over to look for another turbo.

Atlanta93LE 12-02-2006 04:26 PM

Thanks. I didn't buy it on ebay, and I cleaned the outside before opening it up. Hopefully that doesn't cause too much issue.

I'd be ok with a 50% refund if I kept the thing, as 50% would buy me a 14b to steal the turbine wheel/shaft.

Atlanta93LE 12-02-2006 10:51 PM

Well, he responded. Seems like he didn't know, and will refund once I send it back. Now just have to wait for his address. Hopefully he doesn't just take the turbo back and keep the money though!

samnavy 12-02-2006 11:34 PM

NO, DON'T SEND IT BACK!!! If you send it back before he sends you payment, then if he decides not to send you money, Paypal won't help you. If he is an honest guy, he'll have no problem refunding your money first. Insist on him sending you money to cover the full purchase price of the turbo and you're return shipping, then ship it to him. If he refuses to do that, then you must open a Paypal dispute and get him to agree in the dispute forum to refund your money no matter what once he receives the turbo. Be sure to get full documentation for shipping and insist upon a "Signature required for delivery" option on the shipping.

I just got burned bad by Paypal because I shipped back a product and the buyer refused to refund my money... and Paypal would do nothing about it because I had poorly documented things and hadn't opened a dispute until after I'd shipped it back to him... I was relying on the seller to be an honest guy, and he took my money and ran. Paypal said that since I didn't still have the item but did at one time have it, then the seller made good on his end originally and I was a dumb-ass to trust him... and I should have opened a dispute and settled it on Paypal rather than relying on the sellers' honesty. PAYPAL DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU! THEY HAVE NO SYMPATHY FOR YOU IF YOU TRUST SOMEONE AND THEY RIP YOU OFF. GET HIM TO SEND YOU MONEY FIRST, OR OPEN A DISPUTE AND GET HIM TO AGREE IN WRITING THAT HE WILL REFUND YOUR MONEY INCLUDING YOUR RETURN SHIPPING PRICE. DOCUMENT THE SHIPPING AND GET A SIGNATURE.

I'm currently pursuing a small claims court suit here in Virginia over this. Paypal will cooperate with the police by sending them all the info they've got if you choose to file a police report and get him charged with petty theft, bait 'n switch, or whatever your state will allow. There are also a couple of internet watchdog groups who keep tabs on people and have databases of known e-commerce shitbag theifs who get away with things that are just barely on the legal side. You could also get in touch with your local FBI branch and see if they have an internet crimes guy around.

By the way, the shitback who ripped me off uses the eBay seller name NUFFFRESPECT (aka Anthony Adebiyi, Far Rockaway, NY) and seems to part out Miatas regularly. He owes me $208 bucks for a rear bumper that I never got. He's a thief. I'm suing him and am pretty sure I can get a warrant for his arrest issued in the state of Virginia for misdemeanor theft.

Here are a couple of the major internet sites if you feel like reporting him if he doesn't make good:
1. Internet Fraud Complaint Center - http://www.ic3.gov
2. National Fraud Information Center - http://www.fraud.org

Atlanta93LE 12-02-2006 11:37 PM

Thanks for the tips. I won't send it until I see the $.

adbradley 12-03-2006 12:13 AM

yeah paypal is a joke. I sold a part to a guy one time, he paid for it, then decided that the shipping was going to be to much (it was a ATV frame) So i told him id refund his money through paypal. Well he was an idiot and claimed he didnt know how to get the money back out of paypal. Being nice, and trying to make the whole deal right, i decided to send a money order for him, 600$. I sent it, he then files a dipute with paypal and they attempted to take the 600 from my paypal account and hold it, there was only 175 in there, so they took that. I then had to prove to Paypal that i had sent him the money. They then tell me that they had already transfered the 175 to his account, and could not get it back from him, and that i would need to get it from him myself. Needless to say, i never got my 175.

cjernigan 12-03-2006 12:49 AM

I hate internet transactions for just that reason. I would much rather deal locally, so when that asshole rips me off I can go see him with a shotgun. Screw getting ripped off online, think i've lost my fair share of ebay/paypal crap as well.

adbradley 12-03-2006 01:29 AM

if i had known where the paypal corporate office was, i would have PAYED them a visit

cjernigan 12-03-2006 01:32 AM

No joke, they make you feel safe getting verified and everything else you have to do. You still get the shaft in the end.
What manifold are you gonna use on your 1.8?

Arkmage 12-03-2006 02:00 PM

there are lots of scams like that around... the paypal (not knowing how to get my money back out) thing is a new one to me, but at least I know now.
