Turbo Exhaust made quiet enough for N/A

So I know a turbo exhaust is too loud for N/A, and the whole deal with backpressure vs flow speed, but...

is there any way to make a turbo exhaust quiet enough for stock usage, then changed back to turbo when I care to? basically I'm wondering if I can fabricate a cat-back for turbo, but change it enough to be quiet, since I'm worried about my stock exhaust failing before go turbo, and dont want to buy a N/A catback just to replace it with a tubo catback soon after.

im aiming for 200HP, up to 250 if i really go crazy, but 200 reliable HP with a large powerband for mostly spirited backroads driving.

thanks, been learning a lot from this forum.

you could use a v-band flage right after you axle and use a smaller diameter muffler and then once you are turbo, just undo the flange and put on bigger muffler...other than that i dont see many other possibilities for you to be exchangable, hope this helps

use a LARGE muffler and a resonator.

Stainless-Steel wool in the tail pipe. Ghetto but effective.

if you leave the cat in, you should be fine. the cat will quiet it down a ton.

Doesnt have to be a V-band but thats probably the best solution right there.

use a ANSA muffler when you want to be quiet lol. Thats what i did. I had a Brainstorm muffler that i guess had rotted out.... and even with a cat, my car was REALLY loud. Actually i have a video..... and yes, this IS WITH a cat.

I have since changed to a ANSA muffler... and i can actually talk in my car to my gf without her going "WHAT?!" every few minutes lol.

But im sure when i go turbo, i'll put the Brainstorm back on because i want to hear the turbo in my exhaust...... or i just might use my track pipe... 2.5 inches of straight unmuffled glory.

video of mine. Its na...no cat, 2.5" all the way, dynamax superturbo crap and a bullet. not overly loud.

cat, resonator, big muffler... when you turbo replace the muffler section with a straight pipe.

Well, the pipe i have... might as well just be one long ass downpipe buahahahaa. I want the sound to go out behind me rather then under me........

so the resonator is good enough on a turbo'd car to quiet it down? what I like now about the car is that it burbles(wont hear that thru a turbo, huh?) and has a nice deep note, and keeps this humble quality all the way up the RPM band. i know some cars are humble until the power band, but i seem to like a nice contained sound with a bass note. i suppose its a bit more luxury car-ish, but its what i like.

Newbsauce 10-10-2007 12:29 PM

so you want a new exhaust.. but you don't want to replace that exhaust when you go turbo....

I mean minus the losses you will take from backpressure I can't see why you wouldn't be able to just run a turbo catback now? I ran a 4-1 header into a 2.5 catback until my turbo setup was bought. I'm not saying it had the greatest performance, but it was great just upgrading my turbo and DP and calling it a day.

Bryce 10-10-2007 12:32 PM

Newbsauce, was it not incredibly loud?

Newbsauce 10-10-2007 01:26 PM

Not really loud...I mean it certainly did not sound like NA, but thats a small sacrifice to make because my exhaust was then plug and play to my old greddy with turbotony DP. I drove it around for several months with that setup. Again, it comes down to your resonator and muffler.

Braineack 10-10-2007 01:44 PM

I absolutely could not stand the sound of my exhaust when i added a header. that's why i went turbo.
