Turbo Exhaust Options

There seems to be a lot of exhaust setups in this forum, so maybe we can put a bunch of options into one thread.

Post what you've got, what it's good for, and how it sounds. (How much it cost to do might be nice for some of us too, if you're so inclined to post that)

Specific setups I'm interested in are turbo with a cat but no muffler, turbo with a cat and a cheap, straight-through muffler like a cherry bomb, and turbo with a cat, and resonator-only with no muffler.

system of choice would be:

> or = 2.5"
high-flow metal core 200-300 cell cat or none
mandrel bent
straight-through muffler like magnaflow

look at the enthuza group buy.

What?

There are only two types of people here!
Type one-Those who have 3" exhausts
Type two-Thoes who wish hey had 3" exhausts

As far as CATs go, your choice.
Muffler-Magnaflow, no choice!
Resonator-not a biggie here.

Enthuza.

I've got their 2.5" system, which uses a straight-through muffler, plus a 2.5" TonyPipe and a 2.5" TonyCat (Magnaflow, ceramic core). Can't speak to how this setup performs relative to a 3" setup with a metal-core cat, but I find it to be acceptable. The sound, in particular, is quite pleasing. At idle and light cruise it is very subdued and mellow, and at WOT is sounds "aggressive" without being raspy or tinny (ie: not like a Honda with a fartcan muffler) I should note that the frontal area of the core bed in my cat is probably 2x that of stock, and somewhat more than a circular "metal" cat, which I believe offsets the thicker core material of the ceramic model.

I've also heard a similarly equipped car with an FM dual. That setup was much more "Raw" sounding. Louder and harsher both at idle and while driving.

I just got rid of the stock system in my '99 which I was running with the turbo. See sig for details. I bought a metallic cat, resonator, and muffler, all Magnaflow, all from performance peddler. All three are straight-through flow designs.

I then had a local shop weld it all in. It is 'only' a 2.5" system but it definitely breathes a lot better than the stock system. The improvement in spool and power was immediately noticeable. And, it is very quiet, only slightly louder than stock. This was one of my goals since this car is my daily driver and a loud exhaust would get annoying after awhile. It is a smooth sound, with a very slight resonance at 1500 RPM. Otherwise it is very flat. No tinny sound or ricer fart can tendencies at all.

The whole thing cost me about $330 parts and labor.
- cat

- resonator

- muffler

If you do not mind it being louder, you can skip the resonator and go with a shorter muffler like the enthuza system uses. The resonator and longer muffler (stock length) that I used were both a tight fit and required more bends in the piping.

The enthuza group buy is also a good idea. It would cost you more than what I spent but it will be a better quality system due to the mandrel bends and better fabrication quality (depending on your local muffler shop's skill levels).

Since we are on exhaust, will my NB stock cat and cat back be OK for 6 psi for now? I know I will spool a bit slower, but it will work at least OK, right? IIRC, my WRX had about the same size exhaust stock with more power than I will have.

Zabac 04-29-2008 03:14 PM

It will hurt, but you will be ok.
Slower spool from what I have heared and lots of restriction alltogether.

It will be fine. I ran my car like this for a couple of months, driven daily, before I installed the exhaust described above.

I run an hks exhaust on my 90 and magnaflow on my 92, both are 2.5in and sound great.

stock SRT4? ;)

Mine is Begi dp, test pipe 2.5 in, 3 out, and 3" Enthuza. Sound is mellow at anything but WOT, which sounds nice but not raspy.

DIY 3" exhaust with a straight through magnaflow and a downturn...this is not my daily driver. Track and limited street use.

Loud inside vehicle but not bad at all outside. When WOT with the straight wastegate dump tube it's very loud.

PROS: Light weight. Easy to fabricate. Low restriction. Easy tear downs.

CONS: Loud

3" Dual for me

like this one http://www.enthuza.com/db5/00450/ent...s/duallook.jpg

i run a 3in. mandrel bent (cut/weld) custom exhaust. v band at the downpipe,no cat,3in. turbo flex pipe (sleeved inside) only a dynomax race muffler where the cat or resonator would normally be and 3in mandrel out to the muffler notch in the bumper. felt a huge improvement in power, sounds nice and deep, not to too loud inside or out. i don't have any vid. from outside the car at idle or anything, but i'll make a quick clip. here's a vid from texas world speedway a few weeks ago, you can hear the exhaust a little over the wind noise.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLi6u...eature=related

in this vid. if you skip about 4:06 and then to 5:13, you can hear my exhaust when i'm doing 130mph. although this vid is a little bit older and i didn't have the 3in. flex or 2ft. of pipe in front of it to the downpipe, that piece was still 2.5 in. back then, it did get a tiny bit louder and deeper with just that short piece replaced with 3''

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hr-Gb...eature=related

muffler - was approx. $69.99 and mandrel pipe and install was around $250.00

XxGoKoUxX 05-06-2008 03:28 AM

i run straight pipes... with a resonator... .VERY loud.... like RX-7 loud with a SRT-4 gurgle

J.T. 05-06-2008 04:25 AM

rx-7 is louder than an SRT? Srts are like 2db(if your lucky) below the legal limit which would make an rx-7 over the dB limit. Anyways my question here is, does Enthuza offer a system(pref 3") that wont get me busted in CA?

2kBlk 05-06-2008 07:24 AM

When I hear, "RX-7 loud" I immediately think of weed wackers from hell. I think he meant as in modified RX-7 volume. I don't think there are any loud Mazdas from the factory.

Got a local shop to make an exhaust for myself and 3 other people here in FL.
3" straight from the flange of the DP(bolts on), into a magnaflow...
Sounds very subtle but deep, until you step on it, then it sounds amazing!

Paid under $400, and all 4 of us love it, as well as the others that have heard it
