Turbo help

I am thinking about rebuilding my turbo instead of buying a new one.

I have a t3 from a 2.3l thunderbird. So i believe its just a regular 60trim compressor with a stage 1 turbine wheel and a .48 turbine housing.

Well its shot to shit.

I wanted to know where you folks would buy a rebuild kit for this OR if there is a sweet ass deal on just a center section that is cheap enough...

Thanks

Probably not what you want to hear, and it's just my opinion, so take it FWIW...

I'd put a new turbo on it. Just me. Things that move fast with precise parts and close tolerances need to be right. I'd cheap on other shit that sits dormant where tolerance aren't critical, but not a turbo. Again, my opinion only. Others will all disagree and that's fine. My new turbo works great though. :) Paid 350 shipped too.

Pat,
Where was your turbo from with that great price?
Do you know who would have this turbo new and so cheap?

If it is rebuilt it doesnt change any of the tolerences though correct?

I got mine off of someone on this forum. He bought it new for ~700, sat on it, never used it, then put it on the forum for sale. It sat for like 2 weeks or more because it was considered too big, so nobody here wanted it. So I got it. :) Full boost by 3300 in 4th gear. DIY headwork FTW.

No idea about rebuilt turbos. I'd say that depends on who rebuilt it, what parts they used, what parts are replaced, their experience, how well it's balanced, etc etc. Again, that's why I said new. I've seen SEVERAL members here buy a "rebuilt" turbo, run it for a day, and have to send it off to be rebuilt. Cost of "rebuilt" turbo + cost of rebuild is about the cost of a new one. I have shitty luck so I just got a new one. Couldn't see spending 150 for a used one, then it leak oil, have to remove it, down time, have it rebuilt for $$$, then put it all back. Being my DD, this needed to be right from the beginning.

Yeah, that all makes sense.
At this point I just cant swing a new turbo. if it was like $3hundo for a new one maybe, but I havent seen one yet..

check cl? ebay? other forums (dont even have to be miata forums).....I just cant believe that you absolutely cannot find a decent deal on a good turbo.

TURNS101 01-27-2009 07:53 PM

Yeah, maybe I am looking at the wrong spots.
usually what seems to be my problem is people tend to put the size of the turbo up and its not enough info on the turbo.
T3/T4- yeah no shit LOL what size though, ya know what I mean.

18psi 01-27-2009 07:57 PM

I know exactly what you mean. Its so annoying. Everytime I'm talking to someone at a meet or some sort of event, I ask "what turbo" and the reply is usually "t3t4"...I'm like "ok, what size, etc etc".....the typical response "I dont know, its a regular t3t4":bang:

patsmx5 01-27-2009 07:59 PM

Just a regular T3 will do fine. I'd look for a good size T3 if I were you. Hell, look for the one I got. :) I love this turbo, and it's efficient to 23 PSI. It's literally ALWAYS in it's maximum efficiency range from 10 PSI to 23. Dead down the middle of the island.

TURNS101 01-27-2009 08:18 PM

That turbo wont spool fast enough for me though.

i need spool and TQ like pauls 2560 dyno.

I know I can get close with a smaller T3 and i think the one I had would do fine. Esp after the increase in CR, a 3" DP, and a some light head work.

Thats why i wanted to rebuild it ;)

Ive got a box with a couple of mixed rebuilt thunderbird/svo/saab t3 chra's.

I'd let you dig through them and find something that works for you. But the drive out is a bit far.

I don't want to ship the whole box.

Do you happen to have a spare exhaust housing?

The turboford guys reccomend these guys for their rebuilds and parts.

Ben, I only have the housing I would be suing.

I appreciate the offer man. It is a bit of a drive though LOL!!!

I will check that site out too.

Thanks
