Turbo install just finished...

Yay! The turbo is finally installed. Just got back from the first drive with the car boosted. Now it's time to get the car sorted. Should be ready for the Miatas at Laguna Seca event next month. =D>

Obligatory pic...

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all night.

I'm definitely in for more info on the very clean coldside reroute. Any pics of that Mr. Woolery?

Sure, I have some pics of the coldside reroute:

Here's some pics of the modified JR spacer:

Attachment 207529
Attachment 207530

And the reroute:

I'm glad that I was able to find all the right parts to make everything go together with nearly OEM-like fit.

Took the car out for the first really fun drive today...not worrying about it exploding on me for the first time since the turbo was installed (got lots of initial issues finally sorted out). HOLY CRAP it has much more power than the last turbo iteration of the car (or at least it feels like it). I was unintentionally breaking the tires loose in 2nd at half throttle taking off from stoplights. Wow...I'm not sure if it's because the car's ~300lbs lighter than last time around, or if it just has a shitload more power than before (prior turbo iteration was a stock FMII w/T25 sleeve turbo)...this thing now feels unhinged. Power delivery is kinda reminiscent of the Ariel Atom...MUCH more than I expected or hoped for.

I can't wait to flog it at the upcoming Miatas at Laguna Seca event.

kotomile 03-11-2009 07:22 AM

Thanks for the re-route pics! Clever use of that bolt on the IM too.

Saml01 03-11-2009 09:37 AM

What did the JR coolant spacer look like before modification?

mrwoolery 03-11-2009 03:55 PM

-flat on each side (no lip or countersinking)
-no bypass tube (had one fabbed and welded on)
-no bungs for sensors (had it fabbed onto the spacer)

Gotpsi? 03-11-2009 04:56 PM

I SEE WUT YOU DID THAR

NA6C-Guy 03-12-2009 01:37 AM

You should sell those JR spacers modified like that. Id buy one right now. Though i dont know if 1.6 and 1.8 would be the same. I dont currently have a welder, and wouldnt like sitting at a shop explaining what I wanted done. Still looks great.

SOMEONE should sell them, but I'm not interested in doing it myself. The way I see it, three pieces could be developed to allow people to make their own partial DIY coolant reroute kits.

-JR spacer like mine (I think it'd work for both 1.6 or 1.8 engines)
-A 1.6 version of the T-stat cap
-A 1.8 version of the T-stat cap

People could buy one or two of the pieces, and the rest would be a cakewalk.

y8s 03-12-2009 10:49 AM

oh you mean like the one begi is developing?

mrwoolery 03-12-2009 01:49 PM

I'll believe it when I see it. I've seen many companies claiming to be developing coolant reroutes over the years (including BEGI). The only ones I've seen make it to market have been poorly done compromises "reroutes" that weren't true crossflow reroutes (BEGI among them). I have yet to see one true crossflow reroute actually make it to market.

y8s 03-12-2009 02:54 PM

oh i just meant the spacer... see the dev thread uhhh somewhere around here.

If BEGI is making the proper spacer (including the bypass tube, sensor bungs, and it seats right) then good for them! :yippee:
That's the hardest part of the reroute to make...I hope they sell 'em by the dozen. :)
