turbo manifold question...
hey im about to order my stuff for my turbo manifold build and had a few questions... i know most of you use the 1.5 inch sch and thats what i plan on using too, but the only flange that i can find at a good price is mild steel... will the SS weld to the mild steel and not crack?
this is the stuff i plan on buying... flange: http://weirtech.ca/catalog/product_i...roducts_id=107 bends: http://www.acestainless.com/index.ph...od&productId=2 i think i have found the best deals but if anyone knows of a better deal, let me know, thanks :D |
Yeah SS pipes mild flanges is how most of them are. Welds nicely, just use SS wire.
Cheers, Dann |
Steel to steel will weld nicely. Go for it!

ok cool, so the SS and mild steel will mix fine :D
did you guys have to oval the pipe to fit the port of the BP port? |
use a filler rod with a high nickel content to bond properly to the mild steel.
it will corrode a little more than stainless rod but it wont break. |
I made my 1st one with the same exact stuff, and if I had to do it over again I'd have used mild steel els.
If rust is a big problem for you then stick with stainless. But for me in CA there is no such thing as rust, and stainless was much harder to work with. Regarding the oval, there are no oval els, you'll have to crush them with vice grips (or whatever else you feel will get the job done but I recommend vice grips) |
a vise works much better than vise grips.
|
lol that's what I meant
|
a harbor freight bearing press works better than a vice.
I use 309 filler rod when joining 304 stainless to mild steel. |
Yep the guy at Airgas showed me a chart and it looked like the suggested filler for 304 was 308 or 309. I plan on using a press of some sort on my elbows as well.
