Turbo Question JCB GT2560s
 

So I've slowly been accumulating parts for a t25 turbo build for my 1997 miata, and of course I was looking for a Garrett GT2560, and found one for $100. But what the seller forgot to mention was that it was actually a GT2560s. From my research it is seems to be used on foreign commercial diesel engines.I didn't pay much attention to it until I started test fitting everything and realized that it wont fit on the taco taco t25 manifold, and it also sits vertically when mounted, as in; once installed, the compressor housing is on top, the core in the middle, and the exhaust on the bottom. So I have a couple of questions: 1. Is this turbo even worth messing with or should I just keep looking for a GT2560r. 2. What manifold would fit this turbo, or should I just redrill the manifold to fit it. And with the turbo mounted vertically, it seems like the oil feed wouldn't even work, So would I even be able to find a manifold, or anything to make it work?.

I just cant seem to find any good information regarding a miata with a gt2560s turbo, which to me seems like a bad thing, as it probably means no one has used it for a reason. From my research i have gathered that it is a journal bearing garrett turbo, other than that I'm clueless. Here are some pictures of it :Pictures

You could make a manifold to adapt this possibly inadequate turbo. The better solution is to ditch it and get either a churbo or GT2560r. You cannot run a turbo vertically.

Yeah I knew I couldn't run it vertically, just curious if the setup could be manipulated so that i could run it horizontally, such as getting a different exhaust housing. And why do you say inadequate? Is it that much worse than the GT2560r?

You may be able to get a different turbine housing. You'd have to figure out if the CHRA has the same mounting provisions as a GT2560r. The whole turbo looks different than a GT2560r though.

I said possibly inadequate. I don't know, is it worse? Is it better? Do you know what the compressor map is? There isn't any information on this turbo, which is why it's not worth sorting through these issues to use a turbo that costs 2% of what the whole turbo build will cost.

Yeah, I can agree that it looks completely different than the GT2560r. And you're right, I should just start looking for an actual GT2560r. I think I knew that already, I just needed to hear it from someone else since I was so close to finally getting everything together. I guess next time I will have to actually take a t25 flange with me to make sure it fits. I honestly didn't think to check to see if it would fit or to see if the turbo would mount horizontally, I guess the manifold flange it was previously on was rotated 90 degrees, but that just seems inefficient in terms of getting the maximum airflow. Either way, it certainly has been a waste of time and money!

you can simply swap the turbine housing from the Sr20 t25. bolts right up and gives you the correct flange. easy and simple to do. it is the same as an R except it is journal bearing. i have one that i did that to and will be running it on my car.

so in short, for 100 it is worth it. just need a t25 turbine housing to work. the compressor map should match the 2560r since the wheels are identical. you might sacrifice some small amount of spool but it should work well.

I'm looking for an sr20 turbine impeller, so if you manage to buy a whole sr20 turbo to use the exhaust housing I might be in the market to buy the turbine wheel/shaft from you.

If I buy a SR20 I'll definitely let you know, but I think I'm just going to buy the housing. I found a ceramic coated housing for $110, so I may go that route.

Hopefully you guys still read this thread. I just bought another miata (97) and the guy threw in a gt2256s, it looks exactly like the one above but smaller i guess. Can i do the same thing? Is there a housing that will fit or a way i can mod it. Im looking to push 250hp with it.
