Turbo setup finished, now what clutch?
 
My setup is listed in my signature. If I go down the highway on my stock clutch it is fine, but if I launch the car from a dead stop and bang gears, it slips in 2nd and 3rd, not enough holding power. So therefore I need something better than stock, but not something crazy and expensive. I was thinking ACT HD, but I don't want to spend $420. What are my other options that will last and have holding power when I decide to get into beat mode?

you should definitely consider a clutchnet clutch...

the act is a really good clutch. ask around, some people have had problems with other brand while others have had no problems with that same brand. not so with ACT clutches, everyone seems to have good luck with them. you're not just buying the name, you're buying a little reliability. that being said, I was lucky enough to get a good SPEC clutch that seems to be working, although it slipped in the beginning, its working good now.

I've had good luck so far (knocks on wood) with my ebay F-1 stage 3 clutch so far. Been running 8 psi on it for almost a year.

I was using the CF Dual Friction. I liked it. It started to slip, and just like Sam I had hot spots (Carbon Fiber Disc). Instead of torquing it better and reinstalling I decided to fuck myself in the ass with clutchnet. Acutally I didn't like the fact that the springs in the hub seemed dead and rattled, I did have a fair bit of chatter.

it held my 200rwtq, dunno how much more it would have if it was installed correctly.

A few things I didn't like about it:

the Carbon Fiber face lowered the friction coefficient, so if i down shifted hard or ever reved it and dropped the clutch it could slip instead of grab.

the pedal was softer than stock.

that's about all i can say about that.

I have a '99 with similar boost levels and am seeing the same slipping behavior that you described (stock clutch); I will be upgrading soon. I was considering clutchnet but after reading the recent and ongoing clutchnet thread I am going with an ACT setup. The cost savings to me is not worth the potential hassle. I'll spend a little extra to be sure it is right the first time.

I'll either get the ZM2-HDSS or the ZM2-HDG6 for more torque capacity overhead should I decide to turn the boost up later. My only concern is solid versus 6-puck for a daily driver but reports here are that the 6-puck is OK once you get used to it, and it is not hard to get used to. I do not want the XT since the extra pedal force seems to significantly reduce slave cylinder life from what I have heard.

Somebody smack me if I am talking out of my ass here :giggle:

XT will be fine on slave. I went XT for my PP and a street disc. (clamping force + slipable engagement) I didn't like a 6-puck with a heavy PP for the street. I could live with it just fine with a "HD" level PP.

I like my ACT HD 6 puck, the engagement is nice and its really not hard to drive at all.

Not meaning to threadjack, but if one were to upgrade to a 1.8 flywheel on a 1.6, what would be the most economical solution to hold 200 whp? Is the F1 stage 1 (not stage 3 6puck) good enough?

Slaves are cheap and easy to replace... pressure plate IS the way to get the lock up you need IMO.

^ it shouldnt matter if its a 1.6 with an upgraded flywheel. The recommendations in this thread apply to you as well.

You can go to ACT's site and see for yourself which of their kits falls in your power range.

I think the HDMM will do.

ZM2-HDSS for $392 w/free shipping from CC.
It'll hold everything your T25 can throw at it.
From personal experience... just buy the ACT and be done with worrying about your clutch for a very long time.

ebay. i have the XTD 6-puc and have no complaints about it, execpt the TO came apart, but after i replaced that it has been great

Drive a 6-puck. I thought it would be worse than it is. Had it in 15k miles now, daily driven it for quite a while, and never had any complaints. Street discs just feel mushy compared to the sharp, positive feel of a pucked disc.

I think I am going with the ZM2-HDG6. Thanks for the feedback as usual.

EDIT: Done. ZM2-HDG6 was in stock, $391, free shipping. It is shipping out today. I'll let you all know how it goes. I am going to use the stock flywheel with some minor lightening if I can find a shop locally to machine it then rebalance it properly.
