Turbo sizing. T3/T4

Hey guys,

I have a 1.8L T3/T4 manifold. It is a one off similar to the BP manifold by ETD racing, it was built by ETD. It is kulaks old manifold from his 450hp miata. It came with a matching 3" exhaust from the turbo back.

I am shooting for 250-275whp, or less. I do not want to be blowing up transmissions. From everything I have read, the transmission is the power chokehold in the 1.8L setup, not the diff (as in the 1.6L) or the motor.

I want as low spool as possible. (Doesn't everyone?)

What are some good CHEAP (used or used OEM, possibly chinacharger, but would prefer used over a chinacharger) turbo's that I should be looking for. A ballbearing GT30xx is out of my pricerange.

Is a T3 S60 too big for my goals? Should I be looking for a small 50 trim vs a 60 trim?

From what I have researched, I should be looking for a 50 trim.

Edit: Plans for my setup:

1.8L BP T3/T4 Manifold (Have)
3" Turbo back exhaust (Have)
Hopefully internally gated T3 50 trim.
If not, then a TiAL 38mm rerouted back into the exhaust
Ebay FMIC core similar to savington's size.
2.0 or 2.5" IC piping
TurboXS RFL // GReddy Type S // TiAL 52mm (Whatever I find cheap used first)
RX7 550's (Have)
Standalone MSnS-e v1 (Have)
JAW Wideband (Have)
Toyota Corolla COP's (Have)
DIY Dual Feed fuel rail.

I haven't done the math yet for fuel (stock pump may flow enough with the 550's and standalone, unsure yet), but if required a Walbro 190HP and a Aeromotive AFPR.

IMHO, minimum you should search for
-SVO/T-bird/merkur xr4ti turbo, that is a T3 turbine .48 merkur or .63 if svo &t-bird, 60 trim compressor .60 a/r.,
-or a T3/T4 .

S-60 is way overpriced for what it is:)

if you search you can find svo's turbo at 300$ rebuilt
bye

FWIW, The super 60 and 60 trim are almost identical. We are talking a .07" difference in compressor wheel size, the rest are exactly the same.

both can support 35 lb/min, which roughly equals 320BHP. These are both straight up T3s.

The 50 trim will find you running out of steam up top, not becauce the turbine cannot support the flow, but the compressor side cannot stay above 60% heat efficiency and it will drop your torque off and blow hot air past 5/6000RPM.

The 50 trim is best for systems under 220rwhp. it only supports 27 lb/min.

When you get into the t3/t4 realm you are looking to support a tad more HP. the only wheel i'd get would be the T04E "40". It supports just under 40 lb/min and won't be overly large. Anything else will just be larger than you need.

a saab or volvo 50 trim will meet your goals. they should be good to about 225-250 whp if tuned right. They can be found for around $100-$150 depending on condition.

550cc injectors at stock pressure with a MS should work great for you goals.

1. Yep, I figured some OEM application would work. 225 is a bit low, (not low period, 225whp will be pretty quick) just considering how capable the rest of the setup is.

2. That is what I thought.

if 225 is too low you should definately consider a 60 trim instead. I'll be running a 50 trim saab unit for a year or two until I get all the bugs worked out and get comfortable with the power level (~200whp). Then I'll swap compressors to a to4e or 60 trim.

I'm pretty happy with my T04e 50 trim compressor.

Too big... I don't want a turbo that large because it makes my engine look smaller... it's kind of the opposite affect of getting a hand job from a midget.

T04E 50 trim with stage 1 t3 .48 turbine for the win.
Stage 3 turbine if you want more power up top with less low end torque.
