This turbo too big for 1.8?

I think this will be way too big for my goals- but how far off a smaller t3 will this be spool wise. really only looking for 250- 275 whp from a 1.8
anyone ever use one of these? I picked this up for my integra but was wondering if it would do decently well on a 1.8 BP? Its not too big to work, but it will be a hell of a ride. Id expect power to come in late and HARD. And not MSM late, big power 1jz late.

The single most important number when it comes to turbo sizing is the compressor exducer. You can get a rough estimate of how a turbo will respond by comparing the size of the compressor exducer between turbos. It is not an exact science, but it will put you into the ballpark.
Small turbos are things like the GT2554R (53.9mm), GT2560R (60mm), and EFR6258 (62mm). Medium turbos are things like the Disco Potato (60mm), GTX2863/2867 (63mm and 67mm respectively), and the GT2871R (71mm). Large turbos are anything larger than 71mm. Yours is a 75mm, which is huge. Turbine wheel inducer size generally follows compressor wheel size, and it can be a good indicator as well, although turbine area ratio (A/R) can make it a little confusing. Garrett's GT2560 is a 53mm turbine. The GTX2863 is a 53.9mm turbine. The EFR6258 and 6758 both use a 58mm compressor exducer. Those are all small/medium turbos. Garrett's T25-turbined 3071R is a 56.5mm exducer, and their true 3071R is a 60mm exducer. Yours is a 64mm inducer (the inducer is always larger on the turbine, your data sheet is a typo), which is not going to spool nice. Your T3 is somewhere between a 3076R and a 3576R. That's enough turbo for around 450-500whp with the right supporting mods. It's not going to spool well, at all, ever. When it does spool, it will feel less like a turbo and more like nitrous. |
Thanks for the replies guys. I had thought I saw guys doing ok spool wise with a 50 trim, good to know this wont work. Guess I'll have to sell or see if the shop will exchange with me

When 4 bolts in a nice rectangular shape became popular. And when garret declared a 5 bolt downpipe as the norm.

I'm confused. I used to own an evo3 16g 'd DSM and it bolted right up to same manifold my t25 came off of.

I dont think i still have the pics it was 10 yrs ago. The DSM's came with an o2 housing between the t25/16g and downpipe. |

the evo9 td05 isn't outspooling the 2560 unless you run it in proper twin scroll config....which is not apples to apples comparison. .......unless you want to show me a current plot of a evo9 turbo on a miata log mani making peak torque before 3500. any turbo can fit any engine. The discussion here is about convenience and parts availability |
Of course you keep the twin scroll for the above spool benefits and of course we are talking about custom manifold and downpipe solution.
There were though a company that manufactured twinscroll manifolds and downpipes for the miata but I don't remember their brand... On my previous setup (I now have a turbo NC) I was shooting 30psi with this little beast and it was a blast to drive. Far better than my previous 2560 and 2871 setups. |

Well it took a while, but results are in for this turbo w/.57 turbine housing on a 97' 1.8l, 185 kpa by 4500 rpm, 3rd gear.... I would say that it is definitely not too big. I pulled some boost duty out around 4200 now so we will see how she does. I'll update with a dyno once I finish tuning it.
