TurboKits.com 1.8 Turbo Kit
What do you think of this turbo kit when it comes to power potential and safety? I currently have a 2001 LS Miata that is all stock except an upgraded radiator. I would plan to upgrade atleast the head gasket, but what things should I research to get the job done right with this kit and what other things would I need to finish off the full turbo upgrade? Turbo Kit Link In my head so far I know I want an AFR, boost gauge (with manual boost control I think), oil temp gauge, and the upgraded headgadket. What else would I need to finish this off? |

Well it's complete, minus injectors and MS.
Complete GARBAGE I mean!!! hahahahahahaha. But really, as long as it's cast instead of the thin china steel we see from ebay, you're probably OK. That being said, $2500 isn't a small cost, You could easily piece together a real kit with a genuine 2554, FM DIY mani/dp, and an ebay intercooler/pipes. Or Kraken, or MKTurbo. Way too many available out there with known results. Hell, even the Ebay cast manifold, which works with FM's downpipe has a few proven results. You don't need an upgraded head gasket, unless the stock one is blown. You'd want a wideband, injectors, and MS. No need for a boost gauge or oil temp gauge on a budget street setup. |
Start with a megasquirt capable of controlling your vvt and a wideband. Learn to tune it and enjoy the added power while studying for your other upgrades. You will need a stronger clutch before adding a turbo anyway.

Where can I look to read more in depth about this stuff? I知 really interested in learning to do things right before I just jump in. I知 planning on buying new injectors and MS. Mechanically I can handle plug and play installations and just about anything you hand me, but where can I go to learn more about the specifics? Like making sure I know what I知 installing and what are some of the little things you need research to know? |

That turbokits kit is junk. Look at the 90 degree outlet elbow, yuck. And the downpipe is what looks to be 2-2.25" diameter? Tiny.
for the $2500 they charge, you can piece together a top of the line efr6258 turbo + kraken manifold & 3" Downpipe and a cxracing intercooler kit. here is the easy button of what you need for this day and age reliable and top performing turbo setup. manifold/dp: kraken t25 for efr or Garrett turbos. Depending on what turbo you want. intercooler: cxracing kit or DIY with universal intercooler and pipe bends. injectors: flowforce 640 or 960cc or ID1050x clutch: FM stage 1 ecu: ms3 basic oil/water lines for turbo if doing Garrett t25 turbo, also add bov and ebc solenoid. Efr has these built in. So no need to buy separately. read the DIY turbo section on this website, and the build threads section. You will see trends of which parts the successful builds use and what fails. but first step is get an ms3. Nothing else. Install it and learn to tune the ecu on a stock car. Then add injectors, retune. Then add turbo bits. good luck. |

I really do want to do this right! Also with the MS, since I have a 2001 I知 finding that I need the MS Pro or something like that. It痴 $1200. Is that true or are there other options within the MS branding for me? I don稚 want to go to another brand really since I really want to be able to rely on the wide support and advice on the more popular MS brand |
You need something MS3-based or better that can control VVT. I would suggest the MSPNP Pro.
