Default Twin turbo Miata done, second time around

The original build thread here from last year was deleted by Philip. It was the same manifold and basic downpipe, but with GT1544's instead of the new GT1548's. It made 239 dynojet rwhp at 13psi at the second to last MT dyno day. Removed to do a sequential (GT2871 still for sale) and sold to Paul, lasted 7 miles before unknown internal object ate the rear turbine (front turbo fine and for sale too). He got a 2560 making 270+rwhp, I got cash and the opportunity to try larger turbos.

Besides the next larger & watercooled turbos, there's also a new much larger ebay intercooler (replacing starion) and intake manifold to round out the differences. There's build threads here on those, search if you care to see or ask here.

I do this cause I like putting myself thru mental distress. Yes single turbos are better and far easier. I'm done building anything for a month or two.

I STILL haven't driven it due to the crappy weather here in NJ. Hopefully tomorrow she'll come home. So I have no idea how much boost it makes (if any) or how much laggier it is. The old setup was un-laggy/instaspool.

All pics can be seen here:Shore Motorsports Twin Turbo Miata take two

I still have to redo my coolant reroute and make permanent mounts for the coolant overflow and oil catchcans, and maybe think of a different route for the front air filter, although I think the new I/C will be fine at cooling the air charge. I have a splash guard for the BOV and undertray installed but not for the pics. EDIT: OH and the COPs...still got to wire them in. Thanks Lazzer!

A short youtube video of the the turbos spinning slowly when I started it for the first time. Yes they were properly primed. They spin slow when the oil is cold.

EDIT: fixed that youtube link, thanks Magna

Is that a FM kit?

Just Kidding, looks great man. I looked at some of the pics on the website and it all looks top notch. We need to see some video of dyno numbers, your setup looks sick.

why the placement of the crossover pipe on the manifold? Seems to me that a manifold of that type acts more lika a pressurechamber anyway, have you had any diferent results? Just out of interrest. Quite cool setup, good way of showing off the fab skills

Sorry, just hp on that one. his would be the tallest one. just above mine :(

note his power blows just about everyone away under 4000 rpm.

Looks good. Now you need an awesome heatshield to go along with it.

Speaking of heat shield - where'd you get the sheet that makes up the current heatshield near the firewall? I've been looking for a place that sells decent heat shield material so I can fab up my own but the only stuff I've found is way to pricey.

I can get it for you or any place that sells thermotec (jegs, summit, etc). I bend it with my fingers and cut it with tin snips. It works incredibly well for such thin aluminum, must be the louvers. After a hard run I can place my hand directly behind it (where the dip stick and heater core hoses are) and feel fine while my upper arm and face feel like it's melding.

My hood is my heat shield Yeah I do, maybe just a simple flat horizontal plate over the manifold.

Initially it didn't have that; there were two seperate manifolds. Because of the firing order the turbos do not get the same exhaust pulse timing (making equal length manifolds for cyls 2&3 and 1&4 was not something I thought I could do). The smaller turbos spooled very quickly to the point where the one turbo would spool before the first, causing a very bad sound (compressor surge?). Like the sound your turbo makes if you have no BOV, except 4x louder and when you are WOT instead of off the throttle. I would have to gently rollon the throttle after ~3000 to keep it from happening. Adding that cross over pipe fixed it completely. It also completely changed the tone of the car, the intake sucking noise became very loud.

Thanks niklas and everyone else on the compliments

smaller turbines, but much larger trim. what you might loose 100-200rpm of spool

What i like is that, by my math, you put out 15 lb/min at redline through the exhaust...so about 7.5 lb/min each....the 1544's efficiency max was at 6.3 lb/min, the 1548's are at 8 lb/min....so they should make better hp per psi.

they do look physically bigger in there...how long before two 2056s?
