Upgrading to turbo...soonish

Currently running a m45. Planning on going turbo once I have everything running right with diypnp.

I don't know too much about ar and all that stuff on turbos so hopefully you guys can help me out. My friend's MR2 is putting out 370hp, so something about there or more would be great. I was planning on getting the FM manifold so I don't have to worry too much reliability. Then going with a godspeed chinacharger. What size turbo would you recommend for best balance of power with least amount of lag?

My m45 is connected to an intercooler similar to the trackdog intercooler where the pipes goes over the radiator. Would it be extremely difficult to get this to work with a turbo? I'm hoping to reuse everything and just get a turbo, manifold, downpipe, piping to connect turbo to intercooler, and maybe bigger injectors.

thirdgen 04-07-2012 11:27 PM

I see absolutely no reason why that IC setup won't work with a turbo. 370whp? Seriously? 370whp is a turbo Miata is serious...
Did you ever dyno with the M45?

dustinb 04-07-2012 11:40 PM

I'm thinking if are trying to hit 370whp, that the whole "maybe bigger injectors" needs to become "getting massive injectors." You'll also need to build that motor of yours, 3" exhaust, and lots of other supporting stuff. You are probably going to need a larger intercooler and intercooler piping to support that kind of goal.

Halcyon 04-07-2012 11:53 PM

Maybe I should set my goals a little lower. Would like to beat my friend's MR2 though.
If I can beat him I think he will go into depression.
A the same time, I was hoping to make this car reliable enough to be my daily driver so I can have fun driving to work. SUV's not very fun.

The M45 only tweaked out 140hp. That's with a misfire and I think the guy didn't know how to tune. Maybe the M45 needs a rebuild, I dunno. Car doesn't idle right when cold and he can't figure it out. The misfire I'm hoping to get rid of with ls2 truck coils.

Currently have 8.6:1 84mm supertech pistons and m-tech rods.
99 head that's been ported. Stock crank I think would be the weak point.
Anything else I need to build up on the motor?
Friend has a magnaflow turbo exhaust sitting around for years. Might have to confiscate that from him.

What other supporting stuff will I need? I know I might need to get a wastegate but I have a blowoff valve already (not installed, just have one laying around).

Smart. Get used to MegaSquirt first before trying to make huge power.

That is a lot of power. Are you willing and ready to address the issues and parts needed to safely and reliably make that power?

Good manifold.

You'll need to get something gigantic like 18psi's old 3076 and run it at insane boost levels to make 370whp. There are not a lot of great china turbos that come in T2 footprints.

That is preference.

How in the world can we help you with that if we have no idea what it looks like or how you're running it.

You won't be able to reuse anything except for the MS and possibly your intercooler.

Trust me. I went from a M45 to a turbo setup. I pretty much threw everything away and wasted a few days trying to "undo" the supercharger setup.

Injectors are a must. 1000's would be good.

Perfect. Now lets hope everything is still fine from that super crappy tune you've been running with the stupidcharger.

You think wrong. The stock B6/BP crank is forged. It won't break.

Bottom end is all you need for those HP goals.

"Turbo exhaust" makes me laugh. If it's not for a miata and at least 3", then I'd pass.

Halcyon 04-08-2012 01:11 AM

Starting to sound like 370hp is not easy for a lil miata.
How about 250hp? I'm reading a lot of people getting around there.

Any info on what ar I should look for or avoid?

blaen99 04-08-2012 01:20 AM

250rwhp should be no sweat if your engine has rods and pistons like you mentioned in the first post.

You may be able to push it to 300rwhp even with what you have.

Halcyon 04-08-2012 07:27 PM

I can get an upgraded ct26 for free. It's been bored out by Garrett and the internals been upgraged as well. It was making 300hp on a MR2 at 14psi.

Would this be a good turbo to start off with? Can anyone confirm it's got a t2 flange and the flange to the downpipe is the common one used on most turbo? Planning on starting off with this one but would like to be able to easily upgrade turbo in the future.

gearhead_318 04-08-2012 07:42 PM

250rwhp is a good number, any more and you'd need to upgrade to a 6 speed since 5 speeds seem to be good up until 250rwhp depending you how aggressively you drive it.

Halcyon 04-08-2012 09:12 PM

If I upgrade to a 6 speed will my speedometer/tach reading still be accurate?

gearhead_318 04-08-2012 10:29 PM

I don't know for sure if it'll be 100% accurate from the start, but I imagine you can fix it to work right.

It's not a T2/3/4/6 flange. It's a proprietary Toyota flange.

If it's a single entry CT26, give it to me, i could use it. If it's a twin entry, DO NOT WANT.

Ryan_G 04-11-2012 12:42 PM

You would need to get a speedo sensor or entire gauge cluster from a miata with the correct 6speed ratios i.e. 4.30; 3.9; 3.636

hustler 04-11-2012 01:14 PM

260whp on a dynojet in my car is just as fast as a base C6 from a roll... Then we have braking and corners. These numbers don't make sense to Miata newbs.

I was just told this: The speedo readout is a function of the differential, not the tranny. Tach has nothing to do with either.

Who's right?

Braineack 04-11-2012 01:41 PM

not the person you just talked to...

You are so confused. Your transmission gear ratio and rear differential are going to affect the speed reading of your car (Note: your speedometer sensor plugs into the transmission). Even tire size is going to affect your speedometer rating. Now you mentioned tach here, which I hope you understand means tachometer. This shows RPM (Revolutions per minute), and this has more to do with your motor, but since your crank is hooked up to the transmission which is hooked up to the differential, they all sort of work together.

I hear mustangs are nice.

Don't like mustangs.
I have 2 Camaros though. :)

Miater 04-11-2012 02:53 PM

It's been a long time since I've spent any time on supramania or stupidforums but I know you can buy weld on flanges for the CT series of Toyota turbos. They are not very effecient however. At 14 psi the temps are pretty high.

Halcyon 04-11-2012 03:09 PM

That's what I've read about the toyota chargers too.
But he said his is bored out and he changed the internals.
I figured since its free, I'll give it a shot. If its a pain, then I'm leaning towards a gt2860.

Probably gonna stick w the 5 speed fir a while too. I'll get a 6 speed after the one on my car and the 2 in my garage blows. I have a thing for accurate speedo readings.
