VHT Flameproof vs. Ceramic Coating
I bought some VHT Flameproof stuff and I'm wondering if it helps with underhood temps.
I'd like to have some kind of heat barrier on my log manifold, so if this stuff doesn't work then I'll have to find some way to ceramic coat it. (there's a thread on it around here) The can says "Ceramic Coating" on it, but it also says "Header Paint". I know ceramic coating isn't paint, but since this says both, and the website says it has ceramic flakes in it, maybe it does help with the temps. |
Whats the temp rating? Chances are it will just burn off.

won't just burn off, I have it on my manifold. Doesn't help with heat, but does make my manifold look prettier.

It's rated to 2000F. This stuff has been discussed in a couple other threads but nobody mentions in those threads about whether or not it helps with heat.
Since it doesn't help with heat, I guess I'm stuck finding a DIY Ceramic coating and an oven to bake it in. |
(Flame suit on, but not a ceramic coated one...) I seriously doubt that ceramic coating does much in the way of reducing under hood temps. See if you can look up the thermal conductivity of ceramic. Then look up how thick the layer of ceramic is that is usually applied to the manifold. From there, the math will tell you how much of an insulator the ceramic coating really is. My guess is a shield that wraps around the manifold would reduce under hood temps more. An inch of air has got to be a better insulator than say .010" of ceramic or however thin it is.

hmmm possibility of discovering some useful info detected
I suggest JoeP break out his easy bake oven and get a vid camera going... |

Not too sure an easy bake would get hot enough, may have to use 2 bulbs :giggle:.

Good to know. I want my manifold pretty also. Skidude, where did you pick the stuff up from? I found some on partsamerics.com id you get it locally? __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
I bought the paint from Advance Auto Parts for <$10 per can. Comes in a bunch of different colors. Somebody should do the bright orange and post it up here. It would look pretty good on a black car, but it would look like ass on my red one.
|
I did bright orange and now its white. My egt's are way high or this stuff just sucks. Ill post a pic up later

I used the black on my Hks manifold 5 years ago and it never flaked off.
