Originally was just going to get m-tuned rods but when i found out that removing stock pistons from the block to fit forged rods the rings wont seal properly as before which means getting a hone and new rings fitted so thought may as well get forged pistons if iam doing all that work!!!

So now looking at pistons and rods.
Iam stock bore 83mm.......should I go for 83.5 or 84mm pistons first of all?
Iam thinking if i go to 84mm and something ***** up then iam at max capacity on standard headgasket or just take the plunge and go to 84mm straight away?

8.6:1 or 9:1 compression ratio?Iam planning to run a gt2871r and aiming for 270 rwhp.

what ive seen so far is m-tuned rods and supertech pistons from 949 racing $731 combined. These seem popular the 83.5mm is 8.6:1.....if I go 84mm i can have option of 8.6:1 or 9:1.

Flyinmiata pistons at $796 and rods at $875

Begi wiseco pistons at $600 and rods at $427

has JE, Wiseco, Cp piston rod kits.
Cp is $810, Wiseco $780, Je $840.

engine wise is a 96 1.8 with 99 cyl head ready to go on I dont think there will be any valve clearance issues with any of the pistons??????

my .02:
get the 83.5 unless you have cylinder wall issues requiring you bore them out more than .5
get the 9.1:1 unless you will want to go much higher than 270.

The supertechs dont have a 9:1 option for the 83.5mm's :(

If you can, try to snag some CP pistons off ebay. Wiesco/CP are both good, but Wiesco has some funny ringland design that makes it all close together, if you wanted custom rings. CP pistons is of course associated with Carrillo rods, same guys, very quality products from them.

Use an ebay auction with "or best Offer" And go like 300-400 for a set and see if someone takes it, it seems they will since they don't sell very fast.

Talk about misinformation...The Wiseco parts should come with rings in the set, you don't need "custom" rings as they are standard off-the-shelf parts for whatever .5'' increment bore size you get.

There a particular set of rings people are going with on 83.5mm pistons for BPs being built for big boost? 20+ psi...

Sorry to thread jack, but this guy kinda brought out some questions I have been wanting to ask? I just see that lots of pistons companies (Wiseco, JE, CP, etc) all have their own rings they sell, so I was wondering if there is any 1 set of rings that is popular/proven?
