What do you guys think about using VW 1.8T Coils?
My toyota COPS are messing up in the cold, so I need new ones. I found some VW 1.8t cops for cheap, and they are new. Anyone see any problems with them? I found this info
Pin 1: Connects to Pin 1 on all other coils and then to +12v from engine control relay (or fuel pump relay). Pin 2: Signal ground Pin 3: Signal from ECU (0, +5v) Pin 4: Power ground (Chassis) so would pin 3 be the tach? I found this too! VW Coils with MEGASQUIRT so bacially, what would I have to modify on my harness for the toyota cops? |
ok I figured out that pin 3 would be the trigger, pin one is the 12V...
and I dont understand why there are two pins for grounds? |
My uncle who is far more learned than I told me today that you can use the COPs off a BMW 318 easily.
Anyone ever heard of this? |
Aside from the obvious problem of them being electronics off a VW, I think 1.8t coils specifically were recalled for burning out so quickly. So I guess if you got the replacement ones you'd be ok but I'd look for another set of toyota ones.

After reading this more closely... The #3 will not be the tach unless the dwell is the right length. The tach signal is a 1.5ms square wave. It probably won't work.

As said above, unless you go aftermarket (BERU) you are still going to be burning coils out at completely random intervals. Being from a VW background this is entirely true and witnessed by myself multiple times.
There is a reason 1.8T guys run around with spare coils in their glove box. Because they NEVER know when one can die. could be 10k miles or less, sometimes they last for 40k. Rarely more. |
alright guys, thanks. I guess ill have to search more for toyota cops.

Yeah, the BMW coils in that Ebay link are for the M50 six-cylinder. They are a POS part, renowned for burning out. There's a "why does my car run sorta crappy" thread with like 1400 posts in it on Bimmerforums. Coils are one of the more common fixes, but weren't it for me.
BMW FTL. Toyota parts FTW. |
Cardriverx, what kinda symptoms are you experiencing with your coils in the cold?

I don't care what you tell me, they all have problems. But the newer ones are a good bit more reliably than the older ones.
