Default Question about 1993 going turbo

Now i did read the FAQs and there was some real helpfull information there but i stillhave some questiosn that i figured i ask here

Now i have a supercharged 2001 vette so i am not new to FI but this will be my first time working on a miata and i want to gather as much info as i can before i start.

So just to give you guys a little background i have a 1993 1.6L stock engine Miata. I got the clutch changed to one i got off ebay not sure which one now. I also have 16" wheels and stock size breaks. Other then that car is all stock.

So now i want to get a turbo kit and i ahev been eyeing couple of DIY kind of kits with greddy turbos and i just wanted to get your opinions on which kit should i go for and should i upgrade like the exhaust and intake and stuff before doing the turbo or should i just go for the kit and see what happens?

Also how much horspower did you guys see with about 5-6lbs of boost on a stock 1993 LE?

Thanks for all your help guys.

whats your power goals and how mechanically skilled are you? (considering you mentioned your wheel size im assuming you bought the vette already boosted)

now that you mention it i am not sure exactly why i mentioned my wheel size i guess i just wanted to list everything after market on my car.

and no i got the vette in 2001 it is a z06 that i drove stock for couple of years and then i got Corsa GTR exhaust (put it on my self) and got bigger brakes 13" in the front and 14" in the back (did this my self as well) i also got headers but got those put on by a stealership. then the final thing was a procharger that i got last year it was put on by ECS supercharging. I am running about 5-7lbs of boost and i have an alky kit to keep me cool i have around 540 RWHP and 440 Tq.

So now that is said and done i am very handy with tools but i dont like fidling with electronics on the car or the AFR or the timming and all that stuff. Looking at the kit pictures it looks pretty simple to install a good DIY instruction set or video is all i will need to do this.

horspower expectation wise i am not looking to make my miata a 10 sec car. I am not sure how much horepower i have now but i think if i get around 50% more then what i have now should be more then enough. for now atleast

Ok, if I were you, I would run the MSPNP with a greddy kit, that should be good for boost with tons of room to grow. Yours looking around 2k for all of that. I think theres a greddy kit for $900ish in the sale section

since you posted in the DIY section, thats what im gonna recommend, build your own kit after researching for a very long time, that way you do it once and you do it right...also, all 1.6 (LE or not) are all the same, so every 89-93...also, you can easily boost twice as much with some kind of timing control, that seems to be the biggest restriction boost wise on ze miata

your horsepower will depend on your set up that you want like your turbo, mani, dp, mangement, fuel delivery, how much psi are you planning on achieving then most likely someone here should give you numbers once you list that stuff..... from what i read average horsepower is between 165bhp and 250bhp (between 7psi and 15psi) theres a couple of guys here that are getting bigger numbers i believe but i dont know how big

then just go with the greddy kit... read up on it then see what you think. theres alot of **** up have to changed when purchased i think the only thing im using it the mani, dp, turbo, and vortech FMU, th hardware is crap and so are the oil lines. heres what iv bought so far:

greddy kit: mani, dp, turbo, and vortech FMU
intercooler
greddy BOv
i spent $80 on pipes so i can fab my intercooler pipes
injectors from the 1.8 miata
and ima just about to buy bipes and msd

but all this is for under $2,000 considering that i spend $1,300 on the greddy kit (thats alot compared to what i could of bought it for)

You've gotta give us a price limit. Cheap for a Corvette guy doesn't exactly translate well for a Miata guy.

What I'm going to tell you is what I tell most guys who PM me or are only looking for a "minor" power upgrade. Now that Megasquirt is here, it takes the same amount of money to go with a full standalone and fully tunable 250whp that you used to get with bandaids and 200whp.

Megasquirt PnP+Peripherals: $900
Begi DP+Manifold: $800
Used T3 or T25: $200
BOV: $50
IC and Piping: $250
Lines/Hoses/Fittings/Gauge: $200
Injectors 440-550: $100
Total: $2500

The above setup should let you achieve a good tune up to the recommended limits of a stock motor... or right about 250whp. With a T3 or bigger GT25 you could certainly run more boost for more power at the sacrifice of longevity. You could also certainly keep the boost around 10psi for an easy 200whp and get essentiallly stock reliability.

Now you absolutely need a better clutch. If the clutch you got from eBay is just an OEM replacement, then it will slip even at your 5-6psi goal. If it's an eBay performance clutch, we'd have to know exactly which one as there are quite a few. If you never want to worry about replacing the clutch again, get the ACT XT. I think the cheapest places online is prostreetonline or carolinaclutch in the $330 range.

Your stock exhaust is essentially not compatible with forced induction. 2.5" is fine for just about anything up to the 220-240whp level and then you'll want to consider a 3". You can go with one of the major manufacturers or have something custom built.

You should also think about safety and the rest of the car. If it's stock, then you've got some things to upgrade before going with FI. Tires, suspension, safety, brakes, etc... should at least be considered.

If you really just want an easy 5-6psi for about 150whp, then a Greddy kit will get you there tomorrow, but if you've never driven a turbo car before, the lag compared to your Vette is gonna disappoint you. I would follow the recommendations of another poster and buy someones used kit that has already been upgraded with a few of the common bandaids like a Bipes/O2clamp or a Begi APFR or intercooler. The stock Greddy kit with a 2.5" exhaust should make a little over 150whp. Any of the bandaids that will let you run more of boost safely should get you another 10whp per psi on top of that. Your upper limit w/bandaids is the fuel curve imposed by the stock ECU when it dumps in a ****-ton of fuel above 5500rpm. If you limit the fuel pressure in the midrange to get a good AF, then you'll run rich up top. If you run a little rich in the midrange, then you'll run stupid rich up top.

Now... how about telling us how much money you actually want to spend?

well i would like to spend less then 2k right now and i would prefer to not spend all of that at the same time so what can i put on the car right now from the list you mentioned like if i get the following

Begi DP+Manifold: $800
Used T3 or T25: $200
BOV: $50
IC and Piping: $250
Lines/Hoses/Fittings/Gauge: $200
Total: $1500

and run this setup using the 5-6 lbs of boost and then later on when i find a good deal on the megasquirt i buy the injectors as well? will that work?

those prices are general, if your willing to do more work you could cut say the 200 for ic and piping down to about $70 (if you have the right tools), money can be saved everywhere you just have to look and wait for the deals

your also going to need to deal with fuel, if your running low enough boost maybe just larger injectors, but anything else and you'll need a fpr possibly a new pump (if u get greedy with the boost)

Buy the megasquirt before even worrying about the intercooler. You will have a system that can run 5 PSI and then upgrade to an intercooler and larger injectors later.

I would probably buy a T3/T4 .48 A/R exhaust with a 50 trim compressor. It won't heat the intake charge too badly and has the ability to make great power at a low boost level.

You need a way to control fueling/timing.

but the intercooler looks so much cooler

ok so what i am hearing is instead of buying an all in 1 kit buy better parts and make my own kit as there are cheaper parts that one ends up replacing any way in kits

If you were to just straight up buy a BEGI kit I highly doubt you would end up replace any of the parts. Though that is out of your budget.

You sound like a guy who is gonna keep the car for awhile and do your own wrenching. If that's the case, then your first purchase should be a Megasquirt. You can get the PnP and the IAT sensor to delete the MAF and pick up 10whp for about $750.

Get it installed, running, and tuned the way you want and then buy the turbo parts as money allows. You'll also want to look into wideband O2 sensors. The overwhelming favorite for using with MS is the LC1 from Innovate.
