What the heck is this? (turbo issue)
 

What is that thing hanging out? Some sort of seal? Never taken a turbo apart... but seen some pics around here, never seen anything like this and I don't think it's supposed to be like that, lol. First I am curious as to what it is? Second... can this be fixed or should I contact the seller/manufacturer? This is the speedy-racer GT2870 or whatever that a lot of guys are running.

looks like a piece of silicon O-ring to me. Is it an elastomer?

Hmm looks like a seal. I didnt see anything like that when I took mine apart. Send Speedy-racer that pic.

yeah it looks and feels like a rubber O-ring/seal of some sort as expected.. just wanted to confirm as I'm not an expert on turbo construction. Thanks for the quick replies, I will shoot him an email for tomorrow. I got a new impact today and just wanted to play around with it and took the turbo apart for fun...glad I did lol.

Also this has all kind of turned me off to the china turbo route... someone help me keep my faith! lol. It's either this or a legit 2560. I realize I'm probably one of the few that had this defect, but you know how it feels.

Dont lose faith. Give speedy a call they shouldnt have a problem replacing it ;)

And then taking a razor blade to it before selling it to the next guy :laugh:

Looks like that turbo was machined for a bigger compressor wheel (76-80mm) and that is the seal for the ring of metal that's making the backing plate smaller to accept that 71mm size wheel. Never seen that done before...

I wouldn't say it unless you know for certain that he even has that option.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't believe that they will take it back.

If we are all getting these china turbos from the same ebay shop (guy's name was Zach), I already spoke with the owner before I got the turbo and asked him some questions about it. Amongst conversation he said that just clocking the turbo and taking off the wastegate bracket voided any return through them. So taking the turbo entirely apart will almost definitely have the same type of response.

I mean there is always the chance they will take it back for an exchange, but I would still be hesitant. They will most likely claim "user error" on disassembling the turbo and not taking it to a "shop". Even though the same thing would have happened if you had taken it to a shop and they opened it up.

Not trying to bum you out, I just want you to be prepared that they probably wont take it back now, and that you might have to fight them on this. In any case, good luck and keep us posted. :bigtu:

I've heard from others that the seller had no issues replacing one of the units. :dunno: Give it a try and see.

I emailed them last night, hopefully they will get to my email today. We'll see what they say I guess

Didn't hear back about the email so I just called. Hassled me a little (why did you take it apart?), but I talked to Sam and he's having me send it back for refund. He didn't even mention swapping out for a new one, but this is better really...gives me more options.

Yeah, the company I got mine from had a guy in charge named Zach and he basically said just removing a bolt out of the thing voided any warrantee/refund.

Did the guy you speak with check out the pictures as you were talking to him? Did he have any response on the rubber sticking out like that?

I sent the pics as I was on the phone with him. He really had no comment on the actual issue, or how it happened, or if it could be fixed. His attitude basically was "well, what am I going to do with it if you send it back? It's going to be hard to sell" and "why did you take it apart", which I just explained that otherwise it was brand new, never used, I just took it apart to clock it, i dont know what they expect since its for 'universal application' haha.

He just wanted reassured that it was new, never used and back together like it came and said if so then he would take it back. Something about he just can't take back a used turbo or he will lose his job? lol. I wouldn't be surprised if they plan to just box it up and sell it to the next person or something, that's kinda the feeling I got, but who knows. Sounded like he might be returning it "under the table" so to speak. Either way, it's all boxed up and it's going out tomorrow.

final update

I sent it back... they got it today and they refunded me something like $225 (out of 300 original paid). I got a 15 percent restocking fee plus 30 dollars deducted for then they originally shipped it to me. Both are kinda BS in this situation, especially the $30 shipping, but honestly I just the issue to be done and sealed lol. FYI I ended up getting a GT28R that was for sale on here instead.

i dont know, looking around at all the other posts with china turbos, even this one in particular, it seems like I am in the minority. At the same time I wonder how many had something like this or similar and just never knew it because they didn't need to take it apart, etc. Ignorance is bliss I guess, haha but really in the end I'm glad I did. Either way though, one thing you're never going to get from a company like this is the support you would from garrett or a reputable vendor, etc, who will stand behind their products and take care of you and not just be concerned about not losing any money ever.

Restocking fee is generally charged on merchandise which is returned because the customer decided they didn't want the product ordered. In this case, you wanted the product which was ordered, but the product was defective. There should be no 'restocking fee' on the product. They fucked up, they pay. This is part of "implied warranty" under the provision "not fit for a particular purpose", and is in fact a reason for legal recourse on your part. The shipping fee is up for grabs, but should have been listed in the auction. If the seller didn't specify that you pay shipping if he fucked up, then he covers shipping too. This is also rational reason for legal recourse if not specified. The seller made a mistake, and is required to return you to your previous, unimpacted status.

Unless the seller explicitly listed "I offer no warranty on this product, Implied or expressed", then legally he is required to refund you the full purchase price of the product, to include the cost to ship the defective goods to you.

Thanks for the info... I will decide soon if I want to take it further. it's hassle enough talking to them, trying to understand their english, lol.
