What should I do while the motor is out??
So, I had to pull of the turbo and mani to re-weld the wastegate flange as it was leaking. So as I am under there pulling the exhaust, I rember that coat of oil I keep seeing, and it hasn't gotten any better. So I'm gonna pull out the motor and fix what I believe to be the rear main and clean up the engine and bay pretty good. So while I'm in there what else besides the leaky seal should I do. I'm thinking about pulling the intake and cleaning it out pretty nicely as I'm sure its full of nasty carbon, maybe I will get it powdercoated while its out. Give me some ideas. I'm gonna try and stay on a low budget, but if its needs to be done, i might as well do it while its out.
Thanks -Michael- |
Timing belt, coolant reroute with custom thermostat housing or spacer for coolant sensor('s). I saw one where a guy built a pipe that ran against the block under the intake mani with all kinds of bends in it. It was the most clean re-route I've seen as near none of it was visible.

While its out do everything you can think of! I regret not getting my stuff powdercoated while it was out.
|
Timing Belt is less than 5K miles old. I might consider doing the coolant reroute.. I looked into it once or twice, but never got past that. I wish I had the money for pistons/rods.. that would make lots of fun! Keep the thoughts coming!

How about getting your flywheel lightened & surfaced.
|
I posted in your thread at m.net.

motor mounts & reroute. I regret not doing mine when the engine was pulled.
|
take photos of you standing in the engine bay.
|
As you already said, clean clean clean.
|
Wire tuck time:)
|
Cleaning and a reroute would b on my agenda.
|
I think im gonna go ahead and poke a hole in the other side of my fuel rail and make it a dual feed. Maybe even paint it something other than that nasty green color. Keep em' coming!

engine mounts if the ones you have arn't fresh. i'm happy as hell with my mazda comp mounts.
if you don't use the A/C it's a lot easier to get it out with the engine out of the way. There is an insane amount of "stuff" in the bay for the A/C and PS. I kept A/C since I knew I'd be back in TX, but my PS is gone with the wind. Replace all the coolant hoses! I think it was rosenthal mazda (finishline performance) that had a complete coolant hose set for like $70... Some of the lines for the oil cooler are a pain to get at with the engine in the car. |
Well, here is a bit of an update.
On order: Hondata Intake Manifold Gasket MazdaSpeed Motor Mounts Paint(Gloss Black): AC Bracket Tensioner Bracket Coolant manifold and tube Coil Bracket Oil Pan Powdercoat: Intake Manifold (Silver) Fuel Rail (Gold) Also doing a bit of a wire tuck including deletion of all the EGR b.s. I powerwashed the engine tonight and got it good and clean. Tomorrow hopefully will get the bay the cleaned up. The motor is looking real nice. Hopefully I can hide some of the wires and make it look real slick. I'll try and get some pictures up. -Michael- |
Well, here are a few shots of the motor and the empty bay finally.

Where's the gold fuel rail at man?
The motor is looking good though and I like the intake mani. I take it you decided to not do the coolant reroute? |
Well, the fuel rail.. is one think im still not sure about. The powdercoated didn't get the parts done in time so I just sprayed the intake with some hi-temp silver. As for the fuel rail I tapped the end for the dual feed and I guess my tap was shitty as the fitting just stripped going in. I think I might make my own fuel rail as you might have seen in my other post. I honestly haven't even thought about the coolant reroute. Has anyone found a real good site explaining it?

thats clean as all hell man nice shyt
|
|
I wish mine were that clean :(
|
new ms motor mounts?
|
New MS mount, Hondata Intake Gasket, Dual feed rail eventually. Hopefully it will get done in the next few weeks.. I need my car back.

That first pic looks hot as hell!! Nice work.

wow, thats one clean engine for just being taken out. Thumbs up. I personally am going to be painting my block a matte silver so that I can see leaks easier in the future.

I thought about that when I was painting my oil pan. But I think everything blacked out will look pretty neat too. One of these days it will probably come out again to put some new goodies in the cylinders.

As requested, here are some pics of the gold fuel rail.

Heck yeah, looking good man. Came out well it appears. What do you pay for powder coating over there. I was told my a classmate he just had his entire truck bed utility box powdercoated black for $30. I was always told previously that is was super expensive.
|
Actually I chose against the powdercoating and just painted them myself. I figure I saved myself $60 or so. I think the intake was 30-40 and the rail was 20. Assuming I can get a damn throwout bearing the motor will be back at home this weekend.
-Michael- |
Nice, looks good for being painted. Hope it stays that way.
What's the deal with no throwout bearing? |
When I powerwashed the tranny I didn't think about pullin the bearing and such out so, since I only get to work on it over the weekends, it rusted shut. Trying to find a Miata TO bearing at 9pm on a Saturday, well leaving out several trips and curse words to AutoZone, I couldn't get one.

Ok, so the motor is back in, and basicly back together. Just need to weld the WG flange back on, and make a new wastegate pipe that goes into the DP. I think i'm also going to make a cat delete pipe. Here are a few pics of the progress.

Ok, shes finally running.. Here are the pics!

Hell yeah, you lovin it or what man?
For your downpipe you used two 45's and a 90? What radius? |
That engine bay pisses excelence
|
Yea, im pretty happy with it. Due to a fuel leak, some of the ral and intake got the paint messed up.., I still need to reroute the boost controller lines, and make a decent mount for the overflow bottle. Hopefully I can get it all straightened out and put it on the dyno. Yes, I used 1 90* and 2 45* bends. I forgot what radius, I think they were 4" or so. They were just the normal size radius for 2.5".
