What turbos are diamonds in the rough?

The progression I've seen here over the past year is that bigger turbos on the miata seem to work really well. I decided to run a china 2871 and it's ok, but not what I'm looking for. Since I have a T25 flange i was looking for a replacement, but $1200 for a new turbo doesn't interest me. At this point I'll just get the 3076 churbo.

What gems are out there that would get you to change your manifold and DP flange? Now that larger turbos are the norm, can we start looking a the used diesel truck turbos? What you be looking for as an alternative to a large churbo that compares in size to a 2871R or 3071?

I can never make heads or tails from all of the wheel, housing, etc sizes. I come here and ask about what will work.

borgwarner is tits
holsets are awesome

that said my godspeed 3076 is doing a stellar job and I love it;)

What's your boost controller and in 5th gear at what RPM do you hit 18psi (that's your boost setting right?)

18psi 04-03-2011 11:35 PM

cheap ebay nxs mbc and my max boost is 16, but I've never logged 5th. In 4th its 44-4500 or so.
its nothing special compared to baller shit like bw or holsets, but it works great.

what turbo are you going with in the future?

What did you end up paying for your 3076? Did you get it straight from godspeed? It's a T25 flange correct?

It would be nice to not have to change my manifold and DP flanges.

350? IIRC
yes
yes

Your signature looks like you have the best of everything. Why not just get a proper turbo to compliment it all?

I'm thinking about selling the car to help pay off student loans. I want to have a reliable setup that is 350whp.

It wouldn't take much to turn it into a track car,so I'll leave that turbo decision to soemoen else. Since I am not going to part the car and will only recover a fraction of my cost, I'm not going to spend 1k on a turbo to sell it in a few months for nothing.

There are a couple of kinks to work out. 1) reaching my power goal 2) I need to replace the ignition switch 3) 3.636 gears

My Godspeed gt28 has performed really well. From what I've seen much better then most china "2870's"

jacob300zx 04-04-2011 04:17 PM

mitsu. td05h 18g or:
evo III big 16g from forced performance

miatauser884 04-04-2011 04:34 PM

What does this equate to size wise?

Asx 04-04-2011 04:44 PM

I'm using a greddy td05h-18g that I picked up on here for cheap. They were used on integra gsr greddy kits so there's plenty out there. A lot of people think they're blown when they develop a good amount of shaft play which is typical for mitsu turbos. You only have to worry if it gets some axial play or blows oil. But if they actually are blown just about any turbo place can rebuild it for you and they're simple to do a diy rebuild too. it's all stock mitsu except for the turbine housing so parts are plentiful.they're about the same size as your churbo so it's more of a side grade.

Holsets can be found relatively cheap the hx-35/hx-40 are about gt30-gt35 in size. available in wastegated t3 flange and divided t4

miatauser884 04-04-2011 04:50 PM

What is a TD05-10?

Serial # 050901 006
this # was right under the ser #
4918017 0

i did find a mitsubishi emblem on it though. he has never owned one only the honda

other numbers I found on it
05-10
080D2 017
13310
78-117

Asx 04-04-2011 06:57 PM

Usually mitsu turbos are coded like this:
TD##x-##x

Where the first set of numbers represents the turbine wheel family. Td-04 is like a gt25, td-05=gt28 etc. the first x is a style letter td05h is different than td05sh possibly slightly different diameter but not enough to jump to a different family.

The second set is the compressor size. higher numbers mean bigger wheels, higher letters are better flowing designs for top end.

So a td05-10 has a fair sized hotside with a cute little coldside. not what you're looking for.

not to thread jack, but didnt wanna start a new thread for a quick question.

so I know alot of people here are fond of the godspeeds, Im trying to find a 25/28 turbo thats only oil cooled and NOT a freakin s13 exhaust flange. am I shooting in the dark or has anyone else found any?

again, sorry to threadjack

Golferluke 04-06-2011 03:20 AM

I'm not the one to ask about turbos but just curious why not coolant and oil cooled? It's really easy to set up the coolant lines, just remove a hose and plug the turbo lines from the turbo into the nipples you removed the hose from. 5 minutes and maybe $3 worth of hose. Even if the turbo didn't come with banjo bolts I bought a pair on eBay for like $10-$15.

Is there any "evo g" equivalent to a GT35?

18psi 04-06-2011 10:38 AM

no

rigidbigelsworth 04-11-2011 11:21 AM

I guess I could deal with it being water cooled also, but my main problem is it seems like all the godspeed gt28 are "240sx 5 bolt pattern" dp flange types. correct me if im wrong, but the 240 5 bolt is different than what most downpipes are made with correct? for example, a begi dp is not going to work on a 240 5 bolt pattern correct? or am i retarded...
