What's the cannister in the nose of the NB?
The one that gets in the way of an FMIC? I was looking at dimensions on the NB I test drove yesterday and noticed it. PS resevoir/cooler? Can it be relocated?

Are you talking abou the beer-can sized cylinder just under the radiator brace?
This: http://www.awrracing.com/pages/mx5/i...go_bye_bye.jpg That cylinder is the A/C dryer. The only way to get rid of it is to remove the entire air conditioning. |
That's the one. Why can't it be moved? Was it on the NAs? I don't remember it on my old '90. I had the FMII IC.

I think it can be moved, but only marginally. You'd have to very carefully bend the tubes and avoid crimping them when rotating the can. It might gain an inch or two, but I'm not 100% certain.

yes it's on the NA. If you have a/c you have it.

Damn I'm getting old and/or my memory sucks.
Braineack, How much room between your IC and the cannister? Thanks, Frank |
less than an inch. that's a 18" wide intercooler. Easy solution if you want something bigger.....don't center the intercooler.

Frank - you can actually put it in the engine bay (a lot of OE mans locate it there). The plumbing exists from hot rod shops, it just requires cutting, flaring and adding connectors and tubing. I opted for the easy way out, bought an IC that fit and bent some tubing to maximized space. After that, there's 23" from the can to exhaust side of the mouth (frame rail). The hot side end tank boss sticks through the mouth shroud and the cold side boss squeezes under the dryer can after some bending.
This IC should work in the mouth while retaining the dryer. I'm also considering this one. It will allow me to keep my oil cooler sitting above it, but it maybe an 1" too wide. Time for a mock up. - rob |
You can make room by bending it out of the way using crescent wrench to bend the mounting tab.
Canister in original position: http://www.brperformance.com/interco...-canister2.jpg Canister bent outward: http://www.brperformance.com/interco...-canister1.jpg I have the same size FMIC as braineack so I only needed to bend a little. The pics above are from the TDR Intercooler instructions. The aluminum seemed really brittle so I would be uncomfortable bending it that much, but I think it can be done if you go slow and bend a little at a time. |
good pics - yes, it is very fragile. Probably wouldn't would make bend back in the direction from which it came. The NB cans must be different- smaller or something, because that looks like more space than I have up there.
