What's this turbo kit?
 

Hi,

I picked up this turbo kit from Yahoo Auctions (about $300) and was wondering if anyone could identify it. It is all stainless, 60mm DP & mid-pipe, has an external wastegate and screamer pipe. It has a GT2510-63T turbo attached to it so I think it's a T3 flange (I thought it was a T25 when I bought it).

Yeah, it definitely doesn't look like a full kit. If that's something you're looking at buying there are some promising things there. Looks like the afm is deleted (presumably standalone ecu), a coolant reroute, coil on plug conversion, and there are some decent parts there. Downside is it's a 1.6 and I'd be curious to know about that manifold and maybe take a look under that wrap for cracks.

Done a lot of searching and I think you are right. It must be custom. Seems solid though.

The spool is horrific compared to my last turbo so probably going to go for the GT2554R next month (after testing this properly - on the track).

The manifold did have a crack at the wastegate so I had it rewelded. I'm hoping it'll last a few more miles.

I'm having a dickens of a time locating any kind of datasheets for that turbo. I've never heard of a GT2510, and web searches aren't producing much in the way of coherent results. Closest I've come is this little blurb from an Aussie forum:
It doesn't look like an outrageously large wheel, so I'm puzzled by your comment as to the spoolup being horrific. Does the shaft spin freely? Any play? What does the rest of the system look like? (exhaust, intake, etc.) Could this be something silly like a failed catalytic converter or an intercooler that's plugged up?

It is a 1.6.

when searching this all i found on the turbo was some HKS connections but no manifold that matched that design. I am really surprised you have bad spool. Can you post up your spool data?

Ah, yes- I see the CAS. I'd been looking at the front thermostat housing, which is clearly a 1.8 part. (This is an interesting engine indeed.)

EDIT: I just noticed that the OP is in Japan, and that the car is RHD. This explains why it has the CAS on the 1.6 side, yet is equipped with what I, as an American, consider to be a 1.8 style thermostat housing. It's a '94-'97 JDM 1.6. I feel kind of silly for not noticing that earlier. This also explains why I've never seen a GT2510 turbo, and why most of the websearch results I got for it were in Japanese. That turbo is a JDM-exclusive part which never came over to the US, or any other English-speaking market for that matter.


Even still, just look at that turbo. Judging by the physical size alone, it's obviously not like he's trying to spin a 3071 here.

by that logic the MSM ihi should spool off idle, and it spools like a disco potato

Is that internal wastegate actuator secured in the closed position?

Yeah the internal wastegate is welded and it's all 60mm from downpipe to tailpipe (no cat).

The turbo I took off the car was a stock 300ZX(Z32) turbo. It pushed 10psi at 2600rpm on a 4th gear pull with a 50mm DP and stock mid pipe but, as you can imagine, had very little at the top end - it made 175hp.

This spools to 10psi by 3600. Looking at the numbers, it seems to be a little bigger than the GT2560R but it does have some shaft play.

Not much reliable spool data but here's what I've got from a 4th gear wot pull (from 2600rpm, 10psi wastegate spring, no boost controller):

Actually going through the logs the spool doesn't seem too bad does it? Perhaps I'm just used to such a tiny turbo with a lot of punch (but not a lot else).

It is an HKS turbo but I'm 99% sure it's not the HKS kit. All the HKS kits I can find are top mount.

Well yeah, throw a MBC or EBC on there and it'll help quite a bit. As will 3" exhaust. Sorry, 76mm.

i am not surprised in this spool with only 60mm exhaust. it didnt hurt with the tiny VG turbo but will hurt with this one.

thats a big compressor wheel but a small turbine.

when i had a 63 trim 60mm T3 wheel (essentially the same as this GT2510) spool was okay, but torque output sucked dick.

Looks pretty close to the OG Greddy (Trust?) kit that were never supposed to get.
