I got a good deal on a China GT2871 with a .64 AR hot side for my 1.6. Unfortunately when I got the new turbo, it had a .86 AR hot side instead of the .64 AR it was listed as. The turbo is on the big side for my 1.6. Do you guys think I should try to return the .86 AR for a .64 AR or try it out. My current setup is a T28, megasquirt, and injectors. Runs good. Looking to upsize my turbo but not have massive turbo lag. Not my daily driver.

That's what I was thinking. I may be able to send it back and get a GT2860 .64 AR instead. Think that it would spool okay with my 1.6?

The turbo I have now has a .86 AR hot side and a .42 AR cold side. Not sure of the wheel sizes. Feels a little laggy but doesn't run out of boost.

I guess it depends on his definition of "lag".
but I'd agree with Ryan that anything past a 2560 on a 1.6 is going to be laggy

chinachargers especially so since they tend to come on really lazy

Because a 2871 on a 1.6 is a stupid idea and will spool horribly. No AR will fix that.

As for the last part: it might be a teensy bit quicker to spool than his current one, but likely won't make any difference at all since that's not his main problem. Like Lars said

Sorry about that lol I changed my setup up and realized I'm sitting on quite a few extra parts. And wandered out of the WTB section when exploring the forum.

And I agree with you guys on going with the smaller turbo I thought I wanted bigger power then the GT2554 gave me but 2 months into the 2871 and Im learning power definately is nice but spool was more important to me. Just didn't know what OPs goal with the car was

Thanks guys and thanks for not roasting me on my first post. GT2560 it will be. It's actually going in a project car that is hopefully several hundred pounds lighter than a stock Miata. should be fun. Almost done. I'm picking up the chassis and body panels from the powdercoater tomorrow. Here are a few pictures of what was one of my Miatas. These are pre Powdercoat, bare metal.

Wasn't there a user on here that ran a 2871r on his 1.6 powered RX7? Anyways his peak hp was pretty crazy (I think it was a relatively stock motor?), but about 2k of useable powerband before redline.

I ran a 0.86a/r 2871R on a VVT 1.8L motor and didn't think the response was terribly impressive. It made decent power down low, but that was owed to E85 and tons of timing. I've driven 0.86a/r GT2860RS 1.6L cars and it was even worse than my 2871R 1.8L. I can't imagine how laggy a 2871R 1.6L car would feel.

The 2560R is a far better choice.

is your current t28 a ball bearing unit? From my understanding, a 2560 is a t28? 2560s/t28 journal bearing and 2560r/t28r ball bearing?

No, It's not a ball bearing unit. It's a little confusing because my existing turbo has a .42 AR compressor / cold side housing and a .86 AR Hot side Turbine housing. I figure the .86 Hot side is not great for spooling so I would like to go smaller. Here is a picture of the tag from the china turbo that's on the car now.
