where to t28
sr20 forums are a cheap place to get used t25's, where does one get cheap and plentiful t28's if such a thing exists?

ebay.com

branded garrett, no better source?
|
Truth of the matter is, chinese turbochargers have come a long way in the past 5 years or so. Why spend 125 bucks on a used OEM garrett turbo in unknown condition when you can buy a brand new chinese t28 for $200? Too many people are using these successfully to ignore them.
|
i would, but i need a garret turbo charger, i'm locationally challenged.
|
OOOOOOhhhh. I see. That is teh suck with the carb E.O. restriction. I'd bum around the SR forums if I were you :/.
|
Found my T28 on the sr20forums for 350shipped. Just gotta wait around.
|
what kind of condition?

Join some Canadian Nissan Skyline GTR forums and you will usually find a bunch of T28's.

will it have some funky flange?

I have a GTi-R t28 from my old DET powered SE-R for sale, $300 + shipping. It worked 100% and boosted great but I started to notice some puffs of smoke during deceleration.
|
There is a big difference between a GTR t28, a GTi-R t28 or an s14 t28. If I remember correctly from my Nissan days you want the GTi-R (sunny/pulsar) t28 or if you can't find one of those an s14 t28. You definitely don't wan't the skyline gtr t28, the turbine is much too small.

I would check the SE-R forums as mentioned as well as the Sylvia conversion forums. The S14 T28 is the same as the GT2560R (most of them call it a T28). Also, the VW 1.8T guys use that turbo as well so they sell them sometimes.
I bought the two I recently sold from Craigslist, but I live in a Navy town and the Navy guys seem to have extra turbos more often than most. |
IIRC early s14's came with non-ball bearing t28's. IMO this is the one to buy since they can be rebuilt, unlike BB turbos. All australian s14 t28's are journal bearing as well.
|
Good point. Not all S14 T28's are BB. I would always make sure you get the info off the ID tag and search that to be sure what you are getting before you buy it.
|
right right, i was looking that up, and decided on journal.
|
If you want journal bearing then the GTi-R is the way to go for sure.
|
i'm seriously considering a t28 off of an rb20det but i've read around and it seems to have a ceramic turbine, any comments on ceramic (i'm only planning on hitting 240 rwhp max on the puppy?) is it possible to easily and cost effectively source a steel turbine and install?
|
One other way is to keep an eye on 2G DSMs. The turbine housing inlet flange is different, but a great many of the 2G guys run the T28s in the DSM housing. Its pretty much the option to the 16G upgrade. Turbine housings are dirt cheap on any of the sources mentioned anyway, so just get the DSM turbo, switch the housings, sell the other, and off you go.
Thats sort of a plan F though, a lot of the other sources will be much easier. I have to wonder just how many people have/are/will just start doing fake EOs with Chinachargers. The economic pressure to do so combined with the absolute lack of moral reason not too is pretty strong. |

is there an ebay chinacharger seller that will give me just a turbine wheel?

1. Yes, my last turbo was a reman'd Garrett. It worked just fine but isn't really apples to apples as it was a bit smaller than what I'm running now. Also, I'm not going to argue that in terms of efficiency a chinacharger might lose in a be-all end-all battle for fastest spool and highest peak horsepower vs. a, what did you call it? Oh yes, 'real turbo'. But to be honest, is it going to be a $400-$1000 difference? Sure as fuck isn't. 2. No, I have never owned a BB turbo. It doesn't jive with my philosophy for building a car. If I had INFINITY CASH like hustler, than perhaps I'd ball hard and run something BB, but as it stands, I don't. I can rebuild a journal bearing turbo for right around 50 bucks, and you just cant do that with a ball bearing turbo. 3. Say it with me now, 'especially'. |

^ Not so sure on that. I am pretty anti-ebay too. Looking at the boost logs from Chinachargers in here, they perform very well indeed. Additionaly, there was a thread here about 2 months ago that blew-up into a bunch of lame arguments, preciptated by a thread on NASIOC which claims that a lot of Garrett stuff is now made in Mexico, which has just as many quality issues as China IME and a sight more issues than Taiwan or East-Europe for instance. |
I have a t28 off a pulsar gti-r and a rebuild kit for it that I may sell for the right price. Slight in and out shaft play, both intake elbows and comes with two intake housings. Shoot me a pm I'm debating selling all my turbo stuff and buying a better platform to start off with.

:giggle: It cost more to rebuild for a reason. You wont find yourself rebuilding them as often as well. There is always an exception to everything. I don't care about your grand ma's brothers sisters dog's original owner who had a turbo that..... When you try to use one of your large journal bearing turbos on a 1.6-1.8l the spool time makes me giggle more then that smiley you used when you thought you had a good point. |

Dude, Please go make an intro thread in the Meet n' Greet section so we know who we're talking to. Please describe your car, your experience, and your goals, or why you're otherwise here. It also helps to put your location in your profile, and details on your setup in your signature. That information follows you around with every post, so that locals know when they can help, and we know details on your setup without having to look through your post history whenever you end up asking technical questions. Enjoy your stay, Damon |

JGY is a shop on the east coast that does lots of FWD and RWD SR20DET work. They have lots of used parts and might be worth checking out. Here are some parts they have listed currently. Might be worth a call...

^ I can vouch for these guys... They are hard to get ahold of sometimes, but back when I had my S14 I got A LOT of my SR swap parts from them including the motorset. Just make sure you go into the phone conversation with a good sense of humor...
