Windshield replacement

So I have to replace my windshield. I found plenty of windshields at junk yards near by, and I was wondering how easy/hard it is to DIY, shops in Miami are shit and full of thiefs.

i paid 100 bucks and they did it in my driveway it was rather painless. its not to horrible but thats a big peice of glass to lug in and out of place in one peice. If you do it use quality sealant.

I have never been able to take one out without breaking it. We have tried on several to have them out while painting and just put back in. The "pros" that came tried to do it without breaking it and they broke it too.

I took on off a mustang once in a junkyard, we broke the first we tried.

But not only does my insurance covers windshield replacements for free, it's like $150 for a pro to come out so it's not even worth going used or diy.

a brand new windshield is probably the most immediately awesome mod you can do on an older car.

Oh shit I just noticed there were replies to this thread. I dont really want to do it myself but there Very few good quality shops in the area and much less honest ones. I'll report later about talking to a few ppl. Most windshield question are answered by "call an expert" :/

Brand new glass should run about 110-150 bucks. I use 3M Adhesive about 20 bucks a tube. I also use primer by 3M which is about 15 bucks. I'm cheap and use old throttle cables to cut the glass out. I've installed windshields in a couple miatas and one in a buddy's RX7. Its pretty straight forward.

^^ pardon my stupidity but I try to google new windshield and nothing would come up. Whos sells them??

I think I paid $120 for mine a while back. "Shops" don't generally do them, mine was done in my driveway, might make you feel more comfortable about it.

buffon01 02-05-2010 12:16 AM

^^^ Ive try to contact places that do this kind of service but no one wants to work :dunno:

magnamx-5 02-05-2010 12:41 AM

most any autoglass places will do it for you.

TwoScoopsofHooah 02-05-2010 03:28 AM

Maybriers is a local PPG dealer (automotive refinishing...paint ETC) got my windshield in 2 days for 115.
As Magna said any auto glass/ automotive paint store should have the glass available for order or they'll do it for ya.

I had mine removed before I painted the interior and installed a fresh one afterwards. We tried to remove it ourselves but had zero luck - the guy broke it anyway. I think I paid $200 or so, including CA tax on the part and an extra $15 fee for the return trip.
