Yep It's official...I'm a pussy. (resonator installed)

Going to be fitting one of these on my mid-pipe.
If it's not enough the other goes on my test pipe.

Since I fitted a smaller muffler in place on teh one Jason provides, I can't stand the noise. 4x9x14 from 5x8x14, I think the main issue is the fact that my waste is almost fully open from 3800RPM to redline. It's almost as bad as when i wired it open for a week, almost.

I don't blame you one bit.

Clean your grout first.

UrbanSoot 06-12-2008 05:52 PM

i need some of that later

 it's black grout...I didn't do it, blame the gay flight attendant i bought the house from.

Atlanta93LE 06-12-2008 05:55 PM

Isn't perforated preferred over louvered?

btw: isn't that just gray grout, and not dirty?

Black grout? WTF?

Thats pretty gay.

Edit: Looks gray and semi dirty to me.

Atlanta93LE 06-12-2008 06:00 PM

I normally like a darker grout...but not with white tile.

Braineack 06-12-2008 06:00 PM

ok ------s.....

Toddcod 06-12-2008 06:22 PM

What size and exaust are you running? I am thinking of puting the exaust on my soon to be turbo miata on my other na and starting fresh.

I am going to daily drive it and take 3 hr trips in it. Would you go 2 1/2" or 3". I was thinking of Magnaflow if I can get a second hand one. I didn't see a flow through for flowmaster.
What do you recommend? I like sound but not stupid loud. And I don't want to hear alot in the cab. I want a happy medium. Leaning to quiet.

Braineack 06-12-2008 06:29 PM

3"....like i said, i had no complaints with the 5x8x14, nor others with a 5x8x18...my choice is just too small and not cool.

y8s 06-12-2008 06:34 PM

scott, LOUVERED? why???

Pitlab77 06-12-2008 06:45 PM

pipe and gay talk:pitlab:

m2cupcar 06-12-2008 07:03 PM

loud is for the race track

Louvered cuts down on the noise more than perf'd... all depends on what you want and what you're willing to compromise. It also depends on which way you have it installed. Open side facing oncoming exhaust to kill noise, or the other way for beter flow. I've got an 18" with the open side facing oncoming exhaust- considered replacing it with this larger diameter perf'd in hopes of better flow and equal or better noise kill with the larger size.

I honestly thought it was going to be preferated, i really dont care either way.

I'll clamp it to the exhaust tip in each direction and see what sounds best....sure as hell will still flow just as well, I still dont have a cat....betcha open towards exhaust will flow better than a cat.

just get back from pride week?

cock ring toss. it's fun having friends who work for HRC.

Mach929 06-12-2008 11:25 PM

that's also something i've been considering...the resonator, not the cock ring toss:giggle:. i'm at 2.75" with an ansa muffler and i think i'd like it quieter, sometimes it feels like i'm going to draw too much attention so the less noise the better. Do a before and after test at the same distance so we can see the difference it makes.

Braineack 06-12-2008 11:32 PM

yeah ill take a few videos, try both directions. like i said, im not worried about the flow restriction, I'm sure it flows better than a cat, and I have 3" freakin pipes for christ's sake.

StankCheeze 06-13-2008 12:35 AM

Just a word of advice for you pussies wanting resonators...

DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT get a Dynomax resonator. Every single person I have ever known that has had one, including me, has had them collapse in the middle. Opt for a Magnaflow instead. They call them "round mufflers".

y8s 06-13-2008 12:57 AM

collapse in teh middle?

resonator?

I have me what they call a "bullet race muffler"

http://www.prostreetonline.com/pso/i.../DYN-24234.jpg

perf core and 35-50 bucks depending what you get and where you get it. made by dynomax. it's very solid. dont see how it could collapse.

emilio700 06-13-2008 01:05 AM

What about a metal core cat? Be a little PC and shave a few db.

m2cupcar 06-13-2008 09:49 AM

We ran a dynomax bullet on a spec miata for years and never had a problem. But I can say that it doesn't cut the sound down like a big glasspack or cat.

I'm still good for 1.5 years. I'll be throwing a 200-300 cell spun metal core in there...eventually.

I don't see how one could collapse....all a resonator is, louvered or not, is a drilled pipe with a shell welded around it. the dynomax happened to have holes drilled out, while the louvers have slots punched in. Unless they use some thin ass metal and drill the too liberally, I don't see it happening.

as far as testing....this may be a good chance to finally put the magnehelic gauge i have to work...

StankCheeze 06-13-2008 09:58 AM

That's what I meant, bullet muffler. We couldn't figure out how they collapsed either. The outside of the pipe looked perfect. The inside looked like someone took a pair of vise grips to a coke can. These were all mounted mid-exhaust with no cat, so our theory is that they have serious problems dealing with heat. I've seen it first-hand twice and heard about it from quite a few others.

Splitime 06-13-2008 10:09 AM

I've also seen resonators and flex sections buckle inwards.

In fact... the rattle/vibration I'm dealing with is either a joint in my exhaust or something crapping out in my resonator already.

Hopefully I figure it out tonight.

m2cupcar 06-13-2008 10:16 AM

Fortunately (or unfortunately) my massive exhaust rattle turned out to be the heat shield on my universal catalytic converter - which is being swapped out for my 200 cell metal core this weekend... if the USPS decides to finally deliver my flanges.

urban 06-14-2008 02:11 AM

yup, thats official

Going with clamps for now untill I can get it welded. Simply shoving it on my tailpipe and it reduces the overall volume just a tad, removes a but of resonance so it's not so annoying, shoudl be good. should have it finished in a bit, it's hot as a coffee mug out there!

It does help smooth out the sound a bit...not sure if it makes it quieter.

Braineack 06-14-2008 05:56 PM

Drove about 45 minutes in stop and go traffic, much improved. The loud ricer whine is gone when I get in boost, and the overall booming resonance of the exhaust is gone. I iz happier.....I'll get some vids tomorrow when it's not raining.
