1/4 mile - stock motor, 223k miles, ebay turbo and ssautochrome - 12.54@117.8mph

There were a lot of tuning and driving mistakes made on my part, that's about all I'll say.

I want to stress that the most interesting part is that this is a STOCK motor that has never had the head off or any sort of refurb. The pulley is JB Welded to the crank. It has 223k miles on it. It is daily driven as much as possible.

I'll head off some posts with a quick Q&A:

Q: Dood, why did you run so slow? Like, you should, like, be like running 11's.
A: Poor tuning(too rich, not enough timing up top but mostly poor boost control) and poor driving (not figuring out how to launch on the current setup).

Q: More info on the car. Turbo specs? What color? Are those really camo seat covers?
A: https://www.miataturbo.net/diy-turbo...results-11402/

Q: What did the car run before?
A: https://www.miataturbo.net/dynos-tim...r-again-39626/

https://www.miataturbo.net/dynos-tim...w-10psi-22496/

Q: What does it make on the dyno?
A: It's never been on a dyno.

Q: C'mon, how much does it make at the wheels?
A: You can use a hp calculator. 2500lbs @ 117.83mph, which would have been higher if I wasn't bouncing off the limiter.

Q: Did you zip tie your phone to the steering wheel?
A: Sorta.

Q: This thread is useless w/o media.
A: It's useless all the way around but here it it:

lol I like the thread format. 12.5 @ 117 is not a slow car...Its actually fast, just has a bad driver :giggle:

Thats pretty quick dude

my favorite part is all the detonation at the end.

Not detonation. The motor would be scattered if it was making those noises under detonation. It was hitting the hard boost cut for a relatively long time.

I don't even know if you could have detonation that sounded like that, especially on E85.

Ok so I wasnt imagining that that lol

What gear do you have?

Fireindc 10-04-2012 05:26 PM

That sound kind of sounds like when mine has spark blowout over 10psi. I've lowered the gap in the plugs and was able to get it to go away, but still the coils wont support any more boost.

Or it could be det. Who knows. New motor going in this winter anyways and will run e85 and lsx coils ;)

Good observation. It's a 4.10 in back. The problem is that the tires are 205/55-14's. They are less forgiving than the 225/50-15 BFG's that I used a few years back. I hadn't expected to mph that high. I had to raise the rev limiter from 7300 to 7500 for that run.

More good points. I am running a .026" gap on the BKR7's which is probably iffy with a stock 1.6 ignition. Haven't been able to get my ecu to play nicely with the D585 LS2 coils yet.

The Evo E85 guys have issues when they run richer than 11.0, one guy even at 11.5. They call it detonation but I'm thinking it's like you said, blowout. I was approaching 10.0:1 which is unacceptable. I am aiming for 11.7-12.0. I hadn't expected the boost to be that high and hadn't properly tuned in that area, just made it rich and backed down the ignition a lot.

A lot of things may have been happening, I'm planning on addressing all issues before going back to the track.

what ems are you running. Megasquirt? I am not sure it is safe to spin to 7500. I am guessing you added more welds to the miata manifold and braced it up good. Reguardless it looks like a lot of fun and good runs.

225k miles and running 117mph traps? I'd say it's obviously safe enough

Wolf 3dV4. Old Aussie ecu, hasn't ever been supported by the company and there is no community to speak of.

I've run 7500 since 2006, only turning it down after a bumpy autox where it would spike to 8100. I was definitely not good with that. Turned it down to 7300 and it only spiked to 7800 or so. :) I forgot to turn it back up because it hasn't been an issue until last night.

The ssautochrome manifold has been very reliable. I have one thin brace on the turbo and one on the WG VTA downpipe. I have no idea why the the villagers are always hunting them down with torches and pitchforks.

Nice man, that's moving out. On a street tire I've actually put down better times without a burnout. Definitely some room for improvement getting off the line but that's quite impressive, especially on a stock motor.

well if it is working for you I may have to give it try. Mad props to you for making good times on the cheap. I've had a few of the ebay turbo exhaust manifolds they do work but you have to brace them and the first one was better than the second. They lack quality control. I had to drill out the exhaust flange bolt holes so it would fit on.

dvcn 04-14-2013 12:32 PM

FYI-
The suggestions of knock, spark blowout and valve float were not the case. It was bouncing off of the boost cut.

aaronc7 04-14-2013 01:25 PM

Nice run! I remember running into you at an autocross event when I lived in SA for a year. Good to see the thing is still running strong. I have since sold my Mazdaspeed 3 and bought a Miata...hahaha.
