1.6 upgraded gReddy dyno

Hey guys, I've had a turbo Miata for about 5 years now thanks to this site. I have no build thread really to speak of, BUT I do plan on making one for may new build this winter. I have a 99 1.8 in my garage that is going in this winter with a new turbo setup, since my current setup burns a little oil on decel (valves? turbo going? rings?, not sure, don't care).

Anyways, I've been running limp-dick boost for most of the time I've had it boosted. I hit an issue where over 10psi it would blow out spark, and was somewhat satisfied with the 180whp (virtual dyno) or so I was making. However just recently I figured I would need a new ignition system for the upcoming 1.8 build, so why not do it while I have the 1.6 still in the car and see what it can do. Since adding COP's I've been able to max out the turbo kit, and it's a night and day difference - even on 10psi that I was running before. So to anyone reading this, COPS are the shiznit.

Onto the setup, 1.6 with 175k miles, greddy turbo, turbo tony 2.5 inch downpipe, ebay fmic, 550cc rx7 injectors, mspnp, COPS, 2.5 inch exhaust, and i think that's all that is relevant.

15psi PEAK, 13psi by redline. AFR were steady 11.8, richening out to about 11.2 by redline. I had JUST street tuned in with VEAL on the new higher boost about 20 mins prior to this dyno. YES it spools slow. NO i don't know why. The dyno was at 5500ft elevation, and that certainly will effect your spool. Yes this dyno is corrected. No exhaust leaks to speak of, NO boost leaks 100% sure on that ( i built a tester to be sure ).

It's fast now though, at least. Time to pull out this motor, and onto my new build. The new build is shooting for more power under the curve, and about 250whp uncorrected.

I have a log of the dyno runs as well, and will update it later once I find the laptop charger.

Thanks Mt.net, i'd never have a car this fast without you guys. Thanks brain for the huge help on my timing map, i'm sure the car would have 'sploded with the extra boost on my old map.

My brothers car is the red s14. It has a 2560 from an s15 on it, and bolt-ons. Made 285whp/290tq at 15psi.

And a shitty pic of my car on the dyno.. for proof lulz.

Nice man. I know that it's got to be a real kick in the ass to drive now. Would put the smackdown on my shit in a rematch lol. How soon are you starting the swap to the 1.8? Have a manifold/dp yet?

Haha, yeah its quite a bit faster. I'll get a virtual dyno going soon to see how that correlates as well, but my car put down about 180whp on the virtual dyno when we raced. The car actually spins tires now, blows them up in first and struggles for traction after a quick 2nd gear shift. before it didn't spin AT ALL, even in first. Its about the perfect power level it seems, i'm only going to shoot for a few more whp with the 1.8.

The 1.8 is happening this winter, as soon as i decide to pull apart my car. It's even harder now that it runs so good, but once snowboarding season starts i wont be worried about driving as much. I figure i'll pull it apart later this month, or early dec. I'm still looking for the right manifold/downpipe combo as well, but I've ordered all the misc maintenance things i'm going to do on the 1.8 such as timing belt/water pump/front and rear main/valve cover gasket/cam seals/etc.

I've gotta say one more time though, these coil on plugs are the shit! Transformed my car completely.

You spool only 500rpm after me and that can be contributed to your 2.5" exhaust and elevation. TD04's aren't known for their awesome spooling characteristics...

You can see my graph HERE if you care to compare.

Thanks SoKool, that actually makes me feel a bit better about my spool. It's looking like a 3inch exhaust is a must have for my 1.8 build, will certainly keep that in mind.

Man the TD04 is a pig, i'm going to try to get a ball bearing 2560 for my 1.8 setup and hope to see huge gains in spool over this thing.

Anyways love your car SoKool, keep up the good work
