FM-II w/Hydra on 2002 250rwhp/210rwtq...

Well, I FINALLY got the car on a dyno. There really wasn't any drama or anything to it. There was 1 run that made 249.8rwhp/210rwtq. But Ed (Balanced Performance) pull some timing back just to be safe with my upcoming track days. We also gave boost a nudge up..from 10.3 to 11.7psi.

At 10.3 the car made a solid 239rwhp/189rwtq. After bumping the boost up a bit and playing around, we got the following dyno numbers down. I wish i kept the one showing 249 lol. We also brought the fuel cut up to 7200rpms.

can upload drf files?

y8s 04-15-2008 02:35 PM

nice. tell me... not to badger you, but what have you done with your VVT?

your curve looks exactly like my cake and eat it too graph. like within 5 hp.

which suggests that with your smaller turbo, you are missing some low end. Lets find it.

Doppelgänger 04-15-2008 02:45 PM

Honestly, we didn't play with the VVT at all. We did discover that the software was initially setup to be running closed loop all the way to redline at full throttle, so Ed changed those settings. He was actually quite impressed with the initial base map that i have been running.. it was quite smooth. I do know when he pulled out 2* of timing, that i actually gained a bit of TQ. (i should have had him smooth out the dyno plots too so they'd be nice and smooth like yours lol).

Also, when we turned up the boost, it went VERY rich down low...dropping past 10 between 3500-4500 rpm. We did clean this up though and a/f's are pretty smooth.

Ben 04-15-2008 02:48 PM

Hmmm. Yeah, I agree with Matt that there's still improvement to be had down low. Does it feel any smoother or quicker when you drive it?

Hey, I took some pulls outside of work this morning. I'm getting a tick over 17psi at 4300 :fawk:

Doppelgänger 04-15-2008 03:05 PM

It does, i can really feel the tq though. Somehow or another... the car managed wheelspin when we tried a 3rd gear pull lol.

Do you think the dip in tq between 4000-4300 is something that could be adjusted with VVT or just with timing?

Oooohhhhh 17psi..... like thats really hard to do on a goddam T20 lol. Im sure if i had a built motor.. i could make 17psi by then...with my bigger turbo :hustler::fawk::noob:

Ben 04-15-2008 03:11 PM

hmm, I think you meant to say "ball bearing" in place of bigger. ;)

y8s 04-15-2008 04:47 PM

the mid 4k torque dip is endemic to the base maps and I haven't investigated it yet. spark map maybe? resonance? port length? combination of all?

however! if you copy my VVT map and do a couple minutes of autotuning below 4500, you will probably have light shine down from above. You have to autotune because if, as I predict, you gain gobs of low end torque... you will require more fuel. It'll probably run midly lean with just the VVT changes. Airflow good.

the map: http://y8spec.com/nemesis/maps/y8s_vvt_mar08.s20
the instructions: check your breakpoints and match up the values in the cells.
the VVT map is goofy and says "%Y" and "%X" which is stupid. You have to correllate that to your grid x / y setup. here's an excel file that does it for you.
http://y8spec.com/nemesis/PWMmap9_scale.xls

again verify your grid x and y in the setup dialog match the excel doc. only the max values matter since the PWM MAP 9 evenly distributes the xs and ys rather than looking like the fuel table xs and ys.

example: the second column in pwm map 9 is not 685mmHg (10 kPa), it is 4% of (in my case) 28.7 psi (296kPa). whatever the F that is. excel!

PS: I like closed loop to redline!

Braineack 04-15-2008 04:50 PM

and after that, upload you .drf files for me to look at locally.

Those are great numbers. When I see numbers like yours and Y8s it makes me want to go with the Hydra for my '01. I hate VVT, it really limits what you can and can't do on our cars. But after reading some of Y8s posts, he's really onto something to figuring this VVT thing out.

Doppelgänger 04-16-2008 07:46 AM

Brains - yeah, i'll get that up sometime today.

Y8s - Remember, i've only had the car for 3 months and i have not really had the chance to dive into all the Hydra's capabilities. I want to though, but i dont want to do something wrong and blow my car up lol. So what you're telling me is that i should just merge your VVT map to my map im running now?

Have you tried running VVT at full advance up until ~5k and then have it switch over to full retard?

y8s 04-16-2008 10:27 AM

Oh right, 3 months. I take my two years of it for granted :)

Here's three graphs of different VVT settings.

full advance (violet), full retard (red), half way between (blue).

I have a new map since the dynoday. Seems better.

Are you guys using dataloglab?
If so what you making on a 3rd gear pull?

silverblur 05-27-2008 12:31 AM

Thanks to Y8s

Y8S,
Just wanted to say thank you for posting that VVT map. I loaded it up this evening and I can feel some more low end grunt. That combined with cold start VVT settings have made a nice positive difference. If you are ever in S Florida, the first round is on me.

y8s 05-27-2008 10:54 AM

You're welcome.

SeanE 05-27-2008 06:56 PM

I just finished installing my turbo including the Hydra last week but haven't had time to tune it since I just got back from NC earlier this afternoon. I too need to download y8s' map to my ecu. Silverblur where in South Florida are you?
