Got me a baseline.

Had a dyno day today so I felt obligated to run the car. Was nice to get a baseline and it also uncovered a few problems that I need to sort out before I get it tuned.

No boost or AFR graphs FTL. I hope that was at like 6psi.

JayL 04-12-2009 02:26 AM

The AFR was extremely rich for the entire pull, especially after 5500 rpm. It comes up to 14# by 4200 rpm and then creeps up to 17# by 7000 rpm. Basically, it just fell on it's face up top and I have a lot of work to do, starting with making the vvt functional.

That video doesn't do the cloud from the open wastegate justice. :D

I should have had you take a video for me. I forgot how crappy the video from my camera is.

Jason; you're not saying 14s and up to 17s AFR by 7,000 rpm, are you?

I hope that these are psi of boost..

ismael_pt 04-12-2009 09:26 AM

but don't match with a GT30R in the miata

y8s 04-12-2009 10:21 AM

the hydra's autotune is phenomenal. use it!

next time you get to the dyno, set the autotune rate to 30-40 and enable closed loop + autotune. one steady dyno pull will get you 90% of your fuel targets nailed based on your AFR table. a little hand smoothing and that's it.

I agree but; as you mentioned those numbers don't match with the turbo Jason has (plus, Jason mentions AFRs)

Let me give the play by play from the past couple of days. Friday night I got everything back together and got it running. It had a few leaks just sitting there so I chased them down and fixed them. Let it sit a bit while I adjusted the idle, drove it a little to bring it up to temperature, but never going into boost.

Saturday morning I wake up to a puddle of oil under the car again. It was leaking oil from the side of the block where the vvt, turbo and oil sensor get their oil. Tightened the fitting again, added a little oil and it didn't appear to be leaking. Went for a drive, the first time I got into it a coupler popped off. Back to the house and tightened all the couplers, it's now 9:30 and the dyno event that I organized started at 10. Headed over there and decided to play around a bit. As soon as the car would hit 3# it would start to completely cut out. Never got any further than that. Had to be at the event so I didn't get a chance to play with it more.

After things got going I went out to the parking lot and changed the plugs hoping that would fix the problem. Pulled out and got in it one time to make sure and everything was fine. Car was very smooth, no knock events and AFR under boost was between 10 and 11. Pulled very smoothly and harder than it ever had before so I thought everything was fine.

Figured it would be safe to put it on the dyno to make a pull. Had plans to make only one pull, ended up making three. After the first pull I knew something wasn't right. Hooked up the shops pressure gauge and confirmed that something was wrong. The car left a puddle of oil from that same fitting that was leaking the other day.

I think everything's fine until the vvt switchover point and then it just falls on it's face. Could be several things, I'm going to start with fixing the damn leak and go from there. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. I know it needs to be tuned, but my concern is that it seems like more than just a tuning issue.

Here's a dyno chart with manifold pressure on it.

Glad you got it running Jason... And have passed along all this information in my thread. Not sure what could be causing it to fall on its face like that however. Best of luck Jason on getting her up and running. How much time have you put into tuning this new setup?

I only made sure it wasn't lean and wasn't getting any detonation. Other than that, no tuning at all. I wanted to do a before and after. Once I get the leaks and any other mechanical items sorted, it goes in to get tuned.

Sounds like a plan... Keep us updated! Best of luck!

y8s 04-12-2009 04:03 PM

post up your current hydra map and I'll see if I see anything in there.

JayL 04-12-2009 05:21 PM

It won't let me attach the hydra map for some reason. PM me your email and I will send it to you. Nothing out of the ordinary from what I can see, just a typical very, very safe base map. When I compare the spark map to what I used on the old setup it's a world of difference. I was running almost 4-10 degrees more spark across the map than this map does. If that's the primary reason it's falling on it's face, I'm fine with that.

I don't know why, but I've been very paranoid about this crap lately. I just want to make sure that I don't have any mechanical problems before I take it in to get tuned.

y8s 04-12-2009 09:41 PM

I bet I know the problem. It's your map. Very simple.

The hydra has a built-in boost fuel cut. It kicks in 3 psi above your boost target.

Your boost target was set at 14.1 psi.

So right around where you get to 14.1+3 psi, it all goes to shit. Looks like around 6 grand give or take.

Raise that up and the problem will probably go away.

JayL 04-12-2009 10:04 PM

On the map that's in the car the boost cut is raised to 19#. I think it's just the timing causing it to do this. The more I look at what it's at now and what I have ran on my older setups, I just think I need to bring it in to be tuned. I just don't think too many people post their dyno runs prior to being tuned.

hustler 04-12-2009 10:10 PM

any fatter than 11.5:1 in my car and output suffered severely. I'm making more power and torque at 15psi with my "tater"...show us your spark table.

I recommend you tune it yourself. Road tune for your target AFR's and enrichments so they are perfect when you go to the dyno. Then tune spark and win at life. If you want the break down of how I tuned mine, I'll post it but I don't want to insult your intelligence.

Oh, and get a few thousand miles on the motor before you tune because everything will change.

y8s 04-12-2009 10:24 PM

you tryin to pull a fast one eh? ;)

I can't tell you if the map you're running has issues without ... the map you're running.
