Hit the dyno again....

Had an opportunity to hit the dyno again. Thought I would see what a bit more boost would get me. This is the same setup as before, but think I have a problem. The last time I hit 277 rwhp ( https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t25700/ ). This time I ran 3# more boost on the same setup and the same number. First pull was 260, but it was extremely rich, we ended up with 277 after I leaned it out quite a bit. Seems to feel a bunch stronger, but the numbers don't lie. Any ideas about why this would be? Here's the video, enjoy.

Same dyno and whatnot, same correction factor as before, if any?

y8s 11-18-2008 03:18 PM

peak numbers dont mean much... what's the curve look like?

Braineack 11-18-2008 03:28 PM

was the IN @ RR set at 100@125 for both?

I believe it's the rolling resistance (RR) of 25% of energy consumption for a vehicle moving at 100kph/62mph.

Here's a copy of the dyno chart. The IN@RR says 100@150 on this chart and on my older one it was 100@120. What does this mean and what should it have been at?

patsmx5 11-18-2008 06:38 PM

You're running 13.6:1 in boost?

Nope, that's how much boost I was seeing. On that run, the A/F was extremely rich and off the chart. I leaned it out after every run, but we halted everything when it wasn't making the power it should have.

patsmx5 11-18-2008 06:59 PM

Ah, that makes more sense. :) Yeah, I dunno why your car isn't making more power, if indeed it is not. I got that same BOV for my 99'. Car is super clean. If I were rich, that's how my NB would look. Maybe college will pay off one day. As I'm sure you know, intake manifolds are all the rage these days. I'm awaiting the dyno plots, but a member here recently dyno'd his 99' w/ a stock intake manifold, then swapped it for a 99' manifold w/ gutted out vics chamber. And he made more power. I'll be doing this soon. You 01+ guys could do the same.

TURNS101 11-18-2008 07:29 PM

Pat, do you have a link to that intake info.
That is interesting to me, now that I have to pull my car apart..

Jay, was there a huge difference in temp outside or humidity or something strange like that?

The before and after numbers are:
264hp/262ftlbs
275hp/263ftlbs

Build Details
Motor yr/displacement: 95 1.8l
Head: stock 99
Intake manifold: stock 99
Exhaust manifold: AbsurdFlow Tubular
Exhaust size/style: Bellmouth 3" AbsurdFlow
FMIC core: 18x12x3
Turbo: GT2560R
Boost: 15psi

Still waiting for the dyno files but it was obvious that the stock intake is a restriction at those flow levels, NA 1.8 and NB 1.8. With the stock 99 intake mani the car hit a wall powerwise by 6k. With the gutted mani it kept climbing to redline.

Below are the 2 intakes in question. We swapped it at the dyno and ran the car again after retuning on the street.

TURNS101 11-18-2008 08:17 PM

Wow, that is awesome..
Now I am tempted.

TurboTim 11-19-2008 08:05 AM

Wow those pictures are pretty crazy haha. I was hoping you'd take them.

I don't even wanna know how long that took Paul to hack apart.

I worked on it for an hour and all I did was weld some holes closed and remove the last bit of internal EGR passage that Paul couldn't reach with his die grinder.

stubbs 11-20-2008 08:32 AM

Paul exactly how did you gut that manifold. I've been looking for manifold options for some time and the old R4 seems to be the only thing available. Thats a very interesting idea you have there.

That's for sure the issue; different loads and rates of acceleration will produce different numbers. I would try to contact Dyno Dynamics and ask them, but it seems the rolling resistance value on each was different, therefore the final output was altered...my uneducated guess would estimate the final numbers should have been closer to 310HP.

what were the affects on low-end torque and spool-up with the gutted plenum? I'm considering the same with mine becuase I don't really want to fuck with VICS.

Still waiting for the fatass from ACA to send us the files. Paul is calling again today. Once we get that I guess ill start a new thread as to not hijack this one anymore. But in summary, my car feels awesome.

how hard is it to trigger a switch at 5200 rpm?

i mean... how hard is it to build a turbo car first?

I thought I had to build some gay fucking circuit shit? If its just hooking up the shift-light, then I'll keep it. My shit would be together if I weren't the glue which held the virtue of the nation together.

cut off wheel. die grinder, and many hours. also had to have some holes filled after removing the shaft for the vics butterfiles and egr.

18psi 11-20-2008 05:46 PM

wow op, your car is CLEAN!!! very nice, and with the dyno altered, its useless to compare one run to another. strong car nevertheless

and that mani, oh my , that looks NICEE
