I can't drive time slip

Well last night it was T&T at the local track, so I thought i'd go out and see if I could drive...Well the end result is I CAN'T or it's just the fact that I get no traction. It just sucks knowing your car is so much faster than these other cars yet you put on a poor performance, oh well here is the run down on what I ran. Granted my car is tuned to 28 pounds of boost, but all I could run last night was 20-21 pounds due to spinning at the top of 4th gear at over 110 MPH.

15 PSI run I make about 270 whp at 15 psi

Reaction: .7828
60 foot: 2.6032 <-LOL
330 ft: 6.3774
1/8 ET: 9.234
1/8 MPH: 88.18
1/4 ET: 13.6693 <-Sucks
1/4 MPH: 108.44

20-21 PSI run, even worse performance

Reaction: .6549
60 foot: 2.5700
330 ft: 6.2981
1/8 ET: 9.1602
1/8 MPH: 88.05
1/4 ET: 13.4990
1/4 MPH: 115.9

I think I should have trapped over 120 MPH at that boost level but it felt like I was on ice the whole track, I was on 205/50/15 Falken Azienez about 30 pounds of pressure. :vash:

I need to set up my 2 step launch control, and get some slicks...

wes65 04-18-2009 02:22 PM

Yeah, your conclusion is correct. You cant drive. Keep it up, you will get faster.

18psi 04-18-2009 03:16 PM

work on those launches man, a 2.5+ '60 is horrible for a FWD let alone a RWD. your car definitely has some better times in it. trap speeds of 115+ are very impressive in my book

NoCrash 04-18-2009 03:22 PM

What track in IL?

jtothawhat 04-18-2009 03:29 PM

It was Coastal Plains Drag Way in NC, it's where i'm stationed now. The launch is killing me though it seems any higher rpm launch the tires light up, any lower I bog out.

kotomile 04-18-2009 03:46 PM

What sort of clutch? You need grippier tires with fewer psi in them.

PS - You said "stationed". What branch?

jtothawhat 04-18-2009 04:19 PM

Marine Corps, getting out in about a month :-D

I have a Spec stage 3+

I was told radal street tires don't really do much when they have less air in them because the sidewalls being so stiff, I really didn't care to find out either.

kotomile 04-18-2009 04:24 PM

IIRC Azenis aren't known for having stiff sidewalls. Lowering the psi is worth a shot though, it's free, and you definitely need more traction.

Good luck when you get out, you have a job lined up right?

turbomclovin 04-18-2009 05:16 PM

damn that moves

Good info, it will be worth a shot. What PSI do you recommend?

As far as jobs, I have applied to a few places. You offering a job? lol but i'll be medically retired, it will give me 50% base pay income plus medical and that good stuff and I can pocket the GI bill going to school in IL. So it's a win win situation.

kotomile 04-18-2009 06:28 PM

Nope I don't have a job for you, I'm in the Army myself.

I'm no drag expert, I just know that 30 seems a bit high.

ApexOnYou 04-18-2009 11:36 PM

Nice trap speed.

FWIW, try lowering the pressures to 28 or 26, I haven't dragged on Azenis in two years but I am pretty sure I was in the high 20s when I did. Although they have a reputation for getting "slimy" when they are hot, definately put some heat in them, but they have 1.8sec 60ft potential if you can slip the clutch a bit.

jtothawhat 04-19-2009 01:38 PM

I just think I need to work on my launches, after the 60' im good with the exception of me spinning at the top of 4th gear but I really can't do much about that other than get better tires. I would love to be able to cut 1.8X 60's though with them, can you explain how you did that...launch RPM, clutch anything that could help? Thanks!

ApexOnYou 04-19-2009 07:33 PM

I don't remember exactly what I was holding the RPM at, but I believe it was between 4K and 5K, slipping the clutch off the line (1/2 sec max). You'll just have to play with it to see what exactly works for you, I spent some time out on a county road in the middle of nowhere practicing slipping the clutch- it feels horribly wrong at first. I didn't have any issues with wheel hop launching on those tires, but my spring rates are pretty stiff if that even matters any.

need more rubber no doubt, i mean 205's and 300whp dont mix.

mrtonyg 06-04-2009 08:58 PM

Power and no way to put it down = time to go back to the drawing board;)

ARTech 06-04-2009 09:28 PM

Koto, that may have been a typo, because azenis, DO have a stiff sidewall, that's what makes them good for auto-x. lowering the pressure anymore that 30 may make things worse.

A few things that may help with the launch:

better tires, obviously. I'd try dr's before jumping to slicks
soft rear suspension
removing front sway

Since you have an ems, you can also mess with speed/gear based boost control.

+1 all the driving skill in the world isn't gonna put that kinda power to the ground with those tires. Nice times though, pretty quick miata you got there. :giggle:
