Wasting my time with a 1600 turbo.

Unless you dont live in America.

Outcome after spending the day tidying up my roadtune on the dyno. Greddy TD04 on a 1600. Got pretty warm at the end from heatsoak so IAT were getting pretty high, but no knock even at 60degrees cel. Tune was fairly safe because race car.

I think it's the greddy setup holding you back. 1.6l can make decent power on decent manifolds with 2560r

Braineack 04-23-2019 09:24 AM

looks decent to me, consistent with what we were getting with those setups back in 2006...

177kw is about 240whp. Thats not terrible although you are running what looks like 19psi to get there. Is that a lower reading dyno perhaps? I made 227whp @15psi on a dynojet way back when with my GReddy setup.

Yeah, it has a kraken manifold and ill be upgrading to a GT2860rs or something in the near future. Was just seeing what we could get out of it. Especially compared to the 1800/subaru td04 that was in it previously before blowing them up.

Sweet, at least that shows we were on track then. It was a free turbo that came with the engine/manifold so wasnt sure what it would make.

It also made 167kw on 205kpa so around 15.5psi which would match your 227hp, we just decided to see how far we could push it. It only made 10kw with another 2 or 3 psi, so the turbo was pretty tapped out. The IATs were getting pretty warm as well.

We are in the process of putting a Kraken manifold on my friend's car. Using the Greddy turbo. Glad to see it will happily put out some decent power. His turbo has been upgraded to a 19T 6+6 compressor though, so it should be able to flow a good bit more.

The problem is the turbine side still isnt going to support the potential of that 19T wheel. I have seen 260whp out of a 15G TD04 wheel, with the 19T IMO youll be lucky to get into the 275whp range before the turbine is choking. Interested to see the results though.

260whp is decent numbers, 1.8 or 1.6? must have had nice cold ambient temps.

Got a hold of the torque readings as well.

I have a td04 to install once I get my issues sorted... I'd be quite happy with 227 whp. :bigtu:

swapped to a 2860 and made a bit more power. 195kw race tune, 206kw was the highest safe peak number.

adamost.nz 08-14-2020 04:33 PM

And a comparison between the two turbos. The garret still has a bit of work to do as it's only running open loop boost for now as we ran out of time. Even going for a hoon around some country roads the slight delay in spool isn't really noticeable, it's still awesome fun to drive.

90LowNSlo 08-14-2020 07:59 PM

they seem close though... and this is good info between the two.

adamost.nz 08-14-2020 08:26 PM

Yeah though in my use case of it mostly being a track car where im depending a lot of time between 4500 and 7500, the bigger turbo seems the better go. Plus I think the 2860 is a bit more efficient at higher boost levels so should hopefully help with temps.

Someone smarter than me might have better info though.

andyfloyd 08-15-2020 09:23 PM

You say 2860, but there are 4 different turbos that are a 2860. You have the gt2860, gt2860rs, gtx2860gen1, gtx2860 gen2. Which did you use? Good numbers

Nice, I have a GTX2860 Gen2. What is crazy is it spools way sooner than the RS that you have. If you ever get the inclination to try a GTX I dont think youll be disappointed, I love mine. They also sound like a jet fighter because of the compressor wheel design with the anti surge housing.

adamost.nz 08-18-2020 05:00 PM

your 1800 probably helps that spool as well haha, but yeah I heard they are pretty nice turbos. Im pretty happy with 19psi byt around 4k though.

Also funnily enough due to NZ lockdown and also having a non start issue I hadnt driven the car since march. I took it for a hoon the day after the dyno and it felt quick, might have spanked a modifed evo 4 of sorts in a "mexico run" and was pretty happy with it. Plugged my laptop in to download the tune after and noticed the boost controller wasnt on in TS. Checked with tuner and he was like we did high power runs so not sure why thats off, ill check logs. Looks like he had done a wastegate pull after and forgotten to turn it back on so I had only been on the wastegate 160kw tune. Put the boost controller on, went for a few onramp pulls, and yeah, 200kw is quite a lot faster than 160 haha, and more than enough for an mx5.

Also shows that even 160kw/220hp is still fun and quick in these cars haha, especially when you havnt driven it in nearly 6 months.
