Hello
Is anyone running something like a standalone knock sensor with a gauge to display knocks or pings? i am just wondering. I have a open wastegate and it gets really loud i am not able to hear anything besides the exhaust. i don't want to blow something up if you know what i mean. i read about some DIY gauges that you can make to display when the knock sensor is activated. would this work for mazda? anyone have one? looking forward for some input.

I use this with the stock '99 sensor. Works like a charm. Just tap it into the stock ECU harness and have fun. Come with an LED so you can "see" when knock occurs. You have to tune it to your sensitivity liking. When connecto to MS you can retard iginition based on knock.

As far as I know, only NB's had a knock sensor.

A question about that device, as it's one I've had my eye on. I want something that I can run into an input on my EMU for logging and spark retard. The documentation for that device shows that it has a knock output line (yellow wire) which is intended for use with their Gameboy-based Dtec-FC piggyback, but they don't describe the function of the wire (signal levels and durations). Do you happen to know what the output of that wire looks like?

For me, it's down to either that or the KnockSenseMS, though I like the fact that the sensativity scales to RPM on the TurboXS unit. On the downside however, the TurboXS unit does not appear to be tunable to the knock frequency of the engine, unlike the KnockSense. Decisions...

the million $ question i would like to ask is why cant we get the knock sensor on the emu to work... & could it somehow be connected to one of these units to retard timing (like a standard ecu) ........

The problem: knock logging has been demonstrated to work on the EMU, but there is no provision in the software for knock retard.

The alternative: Find a standalone knock sensor that will be fed into the EMUs AFM input line, and used to drive the IGN2 map.

Gonna try a KnockSenseMS to see how that goes.

I think that one has already been done, it's just too damn expensive. The KnockSenseMS is under $100, and I think that for those of us not using the AFM/MAF input on our EMUs (which should be everybody) that you can feed it into that input and drive an IGN map with it.

Any reason not to try it with the stock '99 knock sensor on a '99 motor that will soon live in my 92 with EMU and AFM removed.

To put it into the AFM input? Well, the knock sensor itself is really just a very rugged microphone. It outputs a very low amplitude signal, which contains lots of broadband noise. In order to be useful, the signal needs to be run through a preamplifier and filter, to raise the level of the signal and eliminate all noise that is not within the range of potential knock.

That's basically what the KnockSenseMS is, along with a comparator to drive the outputs.

Oh stop... I realize AFM removal is not for everyone, what I meant is that even if you're running a stock MAF/AFM, there is no compelling need to pass that signal through the EMU, so that input can potentially be freed up on any Miata.

I was just giving you a little grief. I am really happy without my AFM and know how much work you put in to make it possible.

I am wondering how much I am going to have to adjust the Airflow Output Map to compensate for the different flow characteristics of the 99 head being force fed from a 1.2L whipple supercharger.

And to keep this on topic, I guess I will just log the stock knock sensor output.

What about the OP and his cheap standalone knock sensor that requires no other aftermarket parts (not everyone runs emanage) There isn't anything cheap that does not need to log or be plugged into a fancy computer or anything?
