support for na install?

I'm new here and am about to buy a newish unit for my 96 w/ oo engine... staying na.

1. How do I determine if the unit is the latest version and is there a basic functionality test?

2. I don't think Greddy provides any support so can I count on you guys for help on the install? Looking for mild gains... + MAF delete and emissions compliance.

3. Can I use a MAC BOOK?

Blue serial emanage? The latest firmware is 1.49. A basic test would be to power it with 12v and establish laptop communication with the support tool. GReddy
In addition to the piggy back you will need a serial to usb cable, wiring harnesses and a map sensor. Install is straight forward / bit of soldering / following a connection diagram.
From what I've seen on a friends 00 1.6 n/a power gains will be mild at best.
The support tool software is windows only.

I'm looking at the eManage Ultimate with MAF delete and Boomslang harness. With Maf delete and tuning can I expect a 10 hp gain?

Probably at redline you'll get a 5 hp boost from the delete alone however with timing and fuel bump you should get more.

...having never done this is it safe for a DIY guy to start tinkering with timing and fuel.

+ what is changed from the oem ecu fuel and timing to extract more power?

Is it safe? Not really unless you have very very good dog ears, for wot dyno is best with det cans.

Fuel can be tuned on the street though. Tune for 12.5 (assuming NA) And as much timing as possible without knocking (stock ecu has fairly safe timing which is where you can get power when switching to an aftermarket ecu). Switching to E85 should help you with some more power as well but you probably will need injectors. From memory stock injectors arent E85 safe.
