LINK G4 ems

First off many thanks to the forum for adding a sub-forum for the LINK and thanks to you aswell Joe :bigtu: . After speaking with Joe he said the LINK fellout of favor after FM went over to the Hydra but it seems LINK is back and are going to make an impact.

After several discussions on here and with my tuner he suggested that I use the new G4 as he is very familiar with it and he is the US distributor. Anyway here are a few links from his website about the G4:

I recentley joined the LINK forum and asked about installation only to be told by a LINK rep that their G4 Miata PnP is strictly for OBDI vehicles. The search continues for another PnP ems.

What made the old Link so great (in the days when I had mine anyway - like about 15 years ago), was the custom software Ray Ayala wrote for FM. Without that software, it was a piece of garbage. Wouldn't buy a standard Link G4 even if it wasn't OBDI only.

I'm still researching ems's so I really do not know which path I will take.

Is the Megasquirt still out of your list?

No sir I must reconsider them now simply because I must have a PnP system because my car is my DD and downtime is VERY VERY important. I read alot of issues though or should I say concerns people have with getting theirs up and running properly. I also do not want to lose any stock guages.

I see in your siggy that you have PnP MSs w/base maps to get the car runing immediately and my ideal ems would only need connecting the MAP sensor w/lead for a WB sensor but until I can get WB I need the ems to run the stock 02 sensor w/out any wiring, did that make sense lol?

I do realize the MS can and will do everything any other ems can do so I guess you and I should discuss a system for me and what my options are.

Thanks a bunch,
Gregg

Having run Dimitris' units on my car and tuned them on others' cars I can tell you that its about as PNP as it gets. Highly recommend him.

Though I would advise to go wb02 right away. No matter what.

Reverant 08-14-2012 09:40 AM

Regardless of whether you are going to get a Megasquirt or not, I would love to hear any reason you may have for not wanting one...

Probably because he's unaware of your services, and even the available hardware PNP variants (DIYPNP) aren't PnP tuning wise.

I think the OP wants to plug it in and drive to work 5 minutes later.

Yes it seem's Dimitris' has the goods so thats why I asked, thanks.

I never pulled the MS from the equation that was not my intent although it may have seemed liked it. If you will could you pm me with your suggestion for my car and what I am looking for? One reason I kinda pushed the MS aside at first is because my tuner does not deal in them but that is not saying he has no experience with, I rely alot on his input nothing more nothing less.

If you could postulate alittle more it would be helpfull. Yes I am new here so that is why I am asking.

Then your thinking is wrong. I am not an idiot or a newbie to the ems's and what is entailed and I expect to spend time on the dyno building good base maps at each stage of my project. Aswell you do realize that there are PnP systems that come with base maps installed taking into consideration said mods?

I will tell you what I do expect though and that is not having to put up with condescending remarks. I'm am here for logical and constructive input and nothing more and if you cannot offer such a reply I will kindly ask you refrain or put me on your 'ignore list'.

I am looking forward to your pm Dimitris' and thanks
.

The current Link offerings are the same as the Vipec offerings which have more dealers in the US that I've seen lately.

Agreed. Back in the day (seriously 10+ years ago) if you were a ECU newb and needed to have help with install, tuning, more tuning, weird problems that were rampant with the factory Aussie Link, well you better be on the Power list and ready to buy new chips from Ray and later Flyin Miata.

I bought this car with the Link already installed and tuned in ~2005 and it was fine for a couple years, then made changes to the car for trackworthiness and had to retune. Having to use ribbon cables, serial to USB adapter, run a WinXP VM on my old macbook, and then still have to pay for mediocre tuning software... ugh. and I didn't have a wideband or EGT numbers so I felt like I was fumbling in the dark. I gave up and got it tuned professionally. Now it's great when driving spiritedly, but putt putt around town, cold starts, A/C, etc. is all unpredictable and I know I gotta tune it on the street, I don't think it can be done on the dyno. Anyway, too lazy and low on resources to track it anyway so it will sit parked for now.

Next time I make a big change, like new motor or turbo or something, I'm going to consider making the leap to Megasquirt as it's now the community darling, understandably so.

I have a Vi-PEC. I had never heard of it but when I was looking for an ECU, my local dyno shop recommended it. I did a little research and found out that they are damn good and getting popular.

I have a Vi-PEC model V88. I the plug-and-play boards are based off of the V44 ECU, which has every feature of the V88 except fewer inputs and outputs. The hardware is similar or the same as the Link G4, however the software is different, as customized by Ray Hall (tuning/ECU guru). You cannot use Link software on a Vi-PEC, or vice-versa.

The Link G4 and Vi-PEC V44 / V88 are light years beyond the Link ECUs that FM was selling years ago.

From what I can tell, the Vi-PEC has default trigger modes for all year Miatas, including the 2006+ duratecs, and has built-in support for the 0+ VViT cam control (it is an option in the drop-down list in my software).

I did not buy a plug-in. Wiring the ECU to the car's stock harness was easy, given all of the pin out information available online. Vi-PEC sent me the base PNP calibration, so I loaded that up in the software and set my inputs and outputs to match. The car pretty much started right up the first time.

The Vi-PEC's built in autotune is amazing.

The feature list is great, and the built-in support for serial data stream output and CAN output gives it plug-and-play functionality with many popular data loggers (Race-Technology, RacePak, Motec, AIM, etc).
