Terrible Gas Mileage...
 

Hey guys, finished up installing my used FMII turbo kit with Link and 550cc injectors a month ago.

After 3 tanks of gas and after coarse and fine road tuning, im getting 17-20 mpg :/

Here's my first thought: I had a friend help me install it and I dont believe the instructions were very clear. He told me to cut the line to the stock o2 sensor near the turbo and just use the WB02 down by the cat. Could this be why Im returning such bad fuel economy? Obviously it's running rich and I can smell gas when at a stop.

Also, even when driving like a grandma I returned 20 mpg. I def have not been a lead foot.

No AFR gauge?

No, this is the kit with the AEM WBo2 sensor with no gauge.

But still, the Link should be able to log your AFRs so you could see where you're at, right?

So let me get this straight:

-you have a kit without a visible wideband readout
-you haven't provided your map or any logs
-the car is clearly either leaking fuel or running so rich you can smell it

And you're asking us what exactly?

Next time you need to go to the doctors office, instead call him and tell him you don't feel good.

He will ask you what are your symptoms.

Tell him something like "well there is blood gushing out of a hole in my body, but I don't know where the hole is. Any ideas?"

Yea, sorry guys. I'll be the first to admit im no "tuner." Total newb here when it comes to turbocharging and then tuning it. Just trying to follow along in the FM instructions as best I can.

No logs. Just using the Link keypad. I can look up how to find them on there and post later today?

My original question was do I need to re-connect my stock narrowband sensor. Could this have something to do with it. Trying to use the "funnel approach" and correct easier things first.

What are you doing with the Link keypad if you don't know what your AFRs are? Throwing darts at it?

The stock O2 is a red herring. It's "easier" than learning how to use your Link system, but learning how to use your Link system has the advantage of being able to actually diagnose and solve the problem rather than guessing.

If you would like to tell me how to access my AFRs, feel free. Ill take note of them and post them later.

I don't know how to do that. Link was outdated well before i even got into Miatas. But, if you have a wideband sending data to the Link, they're in there. It would be in the FM instructions. It's IMPERATIVE that you know your AFRs in order to tune.

And i don't use old shit on my Miatas. :bowrofl: Fragile junk motors like the BP require cutting edge technology to hold together under boost.

Bah. The only "engine management" invented before I was born involves swapping out jets on a carburetor.

Dustin, when you installed the Link and the AEM WBO2 sensor you should have entered new O2 sensor targets into zones Z26 through Z31. I'm guessing you did not do this because the default values in the Link are in the 70s to the 90s and the AEM WBO2 sensor uses values in the 20s and 30s. You will find details on how to do this on page 46 of the FM Link Tuning Manual.
