Default ignition timing? bad timing? PCV?

I have a 1995 miata M edition with just over 115,xxx miles and i just recently decided to go ahead and remove all my lifters and clean them thoroughly and put them back in.

none were collapsed or broken, just dirty, they all had full compression when i put them back in and reset the timing. Now, i go to start the car and sometimes it starts and runs fine for about a minute at perfect idle [850]... give it gas, comes right back to idle, timing sounds fine, all pulley's, electrics, accessories, everything fine....

then, other times i start, weak idle, give it gas and i get a major bog down like a huge vacuum leak, sound likes it's maybe running a cyclinder short at times and just shuts off for no reason and then can't restart.

almost as if the entire engine has a huge short in it or something but it sounds like an air flow/fuel flow issue...

any ideas?

also need to know if it's OBDI or OBDII? i heard there were some discrepancies with the 95' miata's

I suspect you've got a vacuum leak, but it never hurts to check timing as well.

All 1995 Miatas are OBD1. There was a rolling change that showed up in mid 1995 to the wiring harness, but that didn't include any OBD2 functionality.
