96 trying to keep it street legal.
I want to turbo it real bad, currently building the engine for boost. Is getting a stand alone Ecu like a hydra of megasquirt the only real way to go? If so I would have to go back to stock once a year for state inspection. What about the FM voodoo box? Haven't found too much data on it but from what I understand it's maybe good for the power I want to make. About 200hp. Thanks

Was gonna suggest historic tags, but wow—upon research, NC requires such vehicles to be 1981 or older!

Smart man. Sounds like you'll make the right decision.
Protip: The right decision never involves Hydra, though. |

so you just make adjustments to not throw codes? What are the steps to make sure it passes?

Having worked with both, I would just do megasquirt, then swap injectors abd MAF/AFM on before the turbo and tie the waste gate open for inspection. Or can get some 280cc EV14 injectors or something and a RRFPR to bump fueling (still tuning with MS) if you want to avoid swaping injectors. |
OP I've got a Voodoo II box I'll sell you for cheap, PM if interested. I used it on my 96 with the FM kit for a couple years when I lived in TN and had to do emissions, and it worked great for what it is. I made 174whp on stock injectors and it was dead reliable. The problem for me came when I decided I needed more power. Don't think I could have gotten to 200 at the wheels on the Voodoo box. |
Looking up NC regs looks like you have three options:
1. Change to stock ECU to do emissions test, can leave turbo in place just open wastegate and drive slowly. 2. Sell the 96 and get a 95 or older Miata which will not have to pass any OBD checks. 3. Come to Colorado and get emissions tested here and then use that certificate in NC. Looks like that is allowed see "out-of-state emissions testing in North Carolina" on the NC DMV webpage. In CO, OBD function is not required to pass. |
You can also use the Xede on a 1996 and not have to swap parts. Injectors can stay in, but you may need to adjust the tune a little leaner at idle.
That said, most of my customers will swap the MSPNP and injectors to the stock ECU/Injectors/MAF and go pass emissions. Then swap it back. Stephanie |
