Back after a long hiatus... Contemplating ecus for my new msm, a little guidance?
 

I'm back! (Don't get too excited now guys) I sold my homebrew turbo 00' about 5 years ago, went through a few other cars (evo, Porsche, z06 vette), and I'm back home in a miata again.

When I left, hydra was the new hot thing (as well as what I had on my car at the time) but it was always a pain in the ass.... From reading a bit, it seems that it still is. At the time, it didn't matter to me whether I retained obdii functionality because I had a way around emissions, nowadays I'm not willing to screw around with all that and I'm looking for something I can run in parallel to the stock ecu that will allow me to run larger injectors and make a bit more power than the ~200whp the msm should be making with the little enchilada package on it now.

Long term plans involve a boosted ls swap for the car (don't hate me, I love torque), and obviously that will change my tuning solution in the future, but I'd like to make some more power for a year or so while I accumulate parts and decide on my final path.

Can you guys point me In the direction of any threads I must read, or offer some personal experiences ( I'm reading through things now but I'm impatient) that might be relevant?

DIYautotune now offers a PNP MSpro ecu for the MSM and '01-'05 vvt engines. I'd buy that. There's a dyno graph floating around in one of their threads with a bone stock MSM against their ECU with a little tuning, it had impressive gains.

If you're not doing too much else, I'd suggest getting that ECU and just swapping back for emissions. There's some head room in the injectors to do this, and you'll only loose a little power.

DIY and MSlabs both make a great PNP unit for the MSM.
Can't go wrong with either one

If you're only planning to run this for a year, then what do you care about passing OBD2?

MS3x or bust. seriously.


Especially if you have LS1 plans--the MS3x can support seq. fueling and spark on a v8 (without mods). The MS2 can only support batch/wasted (with mods).

Yep, we've just released a plug and play MS3 for the Mazdspeed Miata a couple months ago. We've been used to seeing people ask if you can get factory-like drivability with a MegaSquirt; with the MS3, we were able to blow the factory Mazdaspeed's drivability out of the water and make the car much more smooth and responsive than the factory ECU ever had it.

Granted, Mazda didn't make beating their tune especially difficult on these cars.

So... go do your inspection, THEN install ECU. :party:

So I could feasibly retain the ms3x after the v8 swap... That's a plus in my book!
