Boost control - MS or external?
 

I currently have a Gizzmo intelligent boost controller with the commonly seen MAC 3 port type solenoid.

I recently re-visited the way my current controller was setup and plumbed to ensure that it references at the right point (Post I/C, pre throttle) yet uses the strongest signal (right off the compressor housing) to actually drive the waste-gate. The system is currently working very well, and while I'm not running all the booostz, it seems to build quickly, and holds steady.

I have been advised by a popular MS vendor to continue to use this - and not the boost control offered by MS.

It makes my ECU fractionally cheaper and easier to build, and is one less thing to tune (The Gizzmo is easy to setup and adjust) - however I'm surprised by the recommendation.

What benefits do I gain by having the engine ECU/Megasquirt control boost, as opposed to an external unit?

Finally - if I DO use MS to control boost, isn't the way it works in contravention to the recommended way to do boost control - I.E. its reading boost post-throttle body (by virtue of it sharing the ECU's MAP sensor), as opposed to pre-throttle.

What version of MS are you planning on using? That could make all the difference in the world of which one to use.

More than likely a DIYPNP or a home built MS2.

I'm sensing MS3>Standalone EBC>MS2...? Hence the advice I got?

That seems like a good progression. Unless your boost control setup is an expensive one that you can sell and make back money on, why change it if it works? MS2 boost control is okay, I could never really get closed loop working right, so it's just open right now. MS3 has much better boost control code, from what I've heard, and you can also setup things like boost-by-gear.

if you're happy with your boost control device, why change it?

In case I was losing out on some functionality by not using MS.

Existing standalone boost control is it then! Thanks.
