Dyno Tuner near S.A.
 

Hey yall

Just finished breaking in the built 1.9L running the TSE kit.

Still autotuning the fuel maps, but soon I will need to get this thing on a dyno to tune spark. I am 100% new to dyno tuning, so I would like to work with a tuner that has some good experience, but Im also a fairly competent DIYer and maybe I can tune it myself? Anyways, if anyone knows of a good tuner in the San Antonio/Austin area please let me know! I may be willing to drive up to Dallas if Hustler is still doing his thing

I made an electronic detcan setup that plugs into my laptop to listen for knock. I have heard differing philosophies on how to tune spark, some saying to advance until det then back off. Others saying you should never take it that far.

Ive of course read a few articles on first dyno days, and will for sure have everything I need (no leaks, computer available and charged, adequate cooling, etc.). Are there any recommended resources for learning how to dyno tune it myself?

Got my acceleration enrichment pretty dialed in. Once my fuel maps are better I'm heading to the dyno.

I wish we had a "DIY Dyno Day" thread here or the like as information seems a little limited and scattered about, would be nice to have it consolidated into one thread.

Should I avoid the "advance until knock then backoff" approach or is that the only real way to tune spark? I feel like there's a way to determine if the spark is optimized based on EGTs or something, but I have no idea. Anyone able to chime in here?

Don't tune spark till you're on a Dyno.

You can road tune spark with det cans.

I mean you can, but why road tune spark when he is already planning on a dyno day?

From what I've seen that way you described, and advancing till no power is gained and then back off, are the two ways to tune spark. Though I'm a big scaredy cat and won't touch spark till I can get someone else to tune it or get access to a dyno. Those seem like unicorns where I'm living now.

Awesome tips. Yea I have considered street tuning spark and I made the wire on the edetcan long enough, but ill wait until the dyno. Gonna drive it by the engine builders shop today which is up by Begi, I might see if I can get Stephanie from Begi to help tune it.

Okay Im a complete idiot and somehow missed the stickied thread on dyno tuning.. That definitely answered all of my questions and more. It is a little dated though.. Is the best practice still to find a few fixed speed RPM/load cells and interpolate from them or are modern megasquirt units able to do this more effectively accross more cells?
