EGR and evap systems - how to implement?
 

I've spent days of free time reading and not found any useful information on duplicating EGR and evap functions with a standalone. Most people seem to regard them as troublesome legal requirements that are easily bypassed. I breathe the air in SoCal every day, so I see the value in them and would like to keep them fully functional.

In my '99, the EGR has a solenoid and four separate coils in the valve itself. There are a raft of valves in the evaporative emissions system. Does anyone know how these are actually controlled? What are the logic and parameters involved? I have the factory manual, and it focuses on how to determine whether individual components are working properly, not how the total system is supposed to operate.

Will it be necessary to keep the stock ECU in the car to operate those systems properly?
