Emmissions... FAIL

Just failed the 3rd test this am. Took 1st yeasterday not knowing, terrible results. Went to R-Speed where we changed power card settings (less tip-in, less fuel at boost) and tied off the idle bypass gizmo and went for another test. Nope- the zip ties came loose and I was getting boost after all. Passed the 25mph test but failed the 15mph. This am I made sure the SC was tied off and went back only to fail again.

The car is a 91 1.6 with an M45, overlay pulley, powercard, Lexus 303cc (I think that's right) injectors and cold air intake.

I filled the tank with that stuff- "guaranteed to pass" but the emmissions guy thinks my numbers are too high for the stuff to work.

Am I just going to have to go back to the 1.6 injectors?

Any suggestions?

add a few more powercards?

So the only tips you guys have is to add some more powercards? I'm not even sure what that means.

Did you get a printout that shows specifically what pollutants you failed for? The details of that would help us help you.

This is what he ment by powercards.

p-p-p-p-p-POWERCARD!

Wait, they made a card for Unown? Last I played that game, many years ago, that pokemon was a glitch that you could only come across by doing a certain few things in a correct order. You also had a chance of screwing up your savegame while you were at it.

Latest test:

25/25
HC- reading 55 allowed 160
CO%- reading .25 allowed .90
NO ppm- reading 18 allowed 1179

50/15
HC- reading 252 allowed 166 (fail)
CO%- reading 8.72 allowed .93 (fail)
NO ppm-reading 1813 allowed 3000

It's a joke. You happen to be using the one device which we most despise.

Ok, that's the important stuff.

Both HC and CO are over at the 50/15 test, which typically points to excessively rich operation. You probably have too much fuel here, which is to be expected given the oversized injectors you are running. You may need to switch back to stock injectors to properly address this, assuming you are running a stock ECU and stock airflow meter.

NOx, while within limits, also seems oddly high compared to the 25/25 test. High NOx in the presence of a rich mixture is somewhat abnormal, but sometimes indicates that the ignition timing is too far advanced- you might try dialing this back a few degrees, as you can expect NOx to increase as you lean out the fuel mixture.

Fantastic, thank you. I'll swap back to 1.6 injectors, tie off the SC and see how that goes.

I was going to buy a MSPNP but was talked out of it. I was told that with an M45 its just not needed and I should go PC for much less $$ and ease. Probably not the right thread but why is it despised?

I'll likely go turbo when this setup goes but for now I do enjoy the 151hp I've got. Just ordered a snow stage 2 system and a AEM fail safe for H2O injection. Believe I'll end up around 160 tuned right.

You might also want to decrease the ignition advance a few degrees, just for safety. When you lean out the mixture, the NOx might increase. Reducing ignition timing will reduce peak cylinder temps, which will in turn reduce NOx production.

It's an astoundingly long story.

The extremely short version is that it has absolutely nothing to do with the actual powercard itself, and is rooted in a number of false claims made by the owner of Fast Forward Superchargers with regard to the properties of the powercard and related products. It sparked off a forum war which simmers to this day, and is indirectly responsible for my choice of avatar.

You absolutely need to install stock flow injectors. The injectors need to be clean and in good shape. When you install the correct injectors, your NOx is going to shoot up, and probably fail you, even though your HC and CO% will be in range. That may be corrected with running less ignition advance, but probably means you need a new cat.

So you absolutely need the injectors. You likely need a cat. Do both and it's basically a guaranteed pass, barring anything such as a bad o2 sensor.
