eMS Pro. Worth using ?

I have:
-94 Miata 130,000 miles with good maintenance. All cyls are within 5psi. It's healthy.
-FM happy meal lvl 1 w/ 13lb flywheel.
-Turbo experience with a few different cars.
Above average mechanical skills. (Been racing for 7 years and do 90% of my own work)
-Very good experience with computers. (I'm a Systems Administrator)
-Not very experienced with electronic maintenance, but I can solder with ease. ( my scarey part )

I'll be starting with an FM VooDoo II w/ GT2560R to make the car run properly, then switch to an aftermarket ECU after the car runs heathy and properly at 8 psi on OEM settings with the voodoo box piggyback. My goal is typical of stock bottom end 1.8's limitations. So... 250ish rwhp at track days and autocross. When I raced 240sx' with SR20DETs, I just simply bought another JDM long block to swap out when they broke.

To the matter at hand...
I have an early eMS Pro (spectre 7100) with a new universal harness and two GM sensors that came in a "kit". I got it about 5 years ago... it's still in the box. I was going to use it in my 90 Miata with a Greddy. But - to be honest, I was spooked with wrecking the car - or fucking something up.

It's not comfortable for me... as I'm sure it is for most folks before they take that step. I'm still not happy about making this plunge...

Is this an appropriate stand alone that I can use? I have to admit... I'm not comfortable doing this, but I do know that I'll have a much better car as a result of using a stand alone ECU.

It's not as powerful as newer designs, but it's still as capable as when it came out. It's able to run fuel and ignition on these cars; you could probably even load a Gen 1 MSPNP base map to help get started.
