So I am in need of help of picking a standalone, or piggyback.
Im trying to figure out prices and what not.

I just have a few questions about what one to get.

I want to get a full standalone.
I kinda want to get a MSII system.

What is the majority of Miata drivers using and why?

The Miata has been in production for almost 2 decades and sold all over the world. There are literally dozens of aftermarket ECU's that can be used. Without knowing anything about your car, your goals, your skills, you build, or where you live, it will be impossible to give good advice. What the "majority" of Miata users differ greatly depending on all of these things... many people make 200whp+ without any kind of ECU upgrade. If price is no object, most people would probably tell you to go in the direction of a Motec, Electromotive, or Haltech unit. They're some of the most powerful units you can buy and have every single feature imagineable... but there is little support in the community and you'll need to fabricate your own wiring harnesses, build your base maps from scratch, and solve a few other problems unique to your build.

If your budget is in the $2k range, then the obvious choice is a Hydra Nemesis from Flyin Miata. HINT: DO NOT ASK WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE HYDRA, GO TO THE FM WEBSITE AND LOOK AT IT, THEN USE THE SEARCH KEY HERE AND AT MIATA.NET TO READ THREADS FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE USING IT!

Megasquirt is a great unit at a low price. There are plug&play models available for 90-97 cars... 99+ you must build your own. MS1 on the 99-00 cars is fairly well sorted, but you have to use an older CAS and most people generally go with a parallel installation in order to let the stock ECU control idle/alternator functions.

'01+ cars are VVT and MSII so far cannot control it. I am unaware of anybody using MSII in a parallel configuration allowing the stock ECU to control VVT and the MSII for fuel/spark.

There are only 2 currently "in use" ECU's familiar to this board that control VVT... the Hydra and the Adaptonic. The Adaptronic is well-known in Australia and England, and the company that makes it is trying to gain some market-share here in the US. There is a group buy going on for it right now, and in a couple weeks, the first guys on this forum should have them installed and will provide us with their impressions.

There are only 2 production forced induction setups for the '06. BEGi has a turbo kit using an Xede piggyback, and Cosworth has developed a supercharger kit being sold through GoodWin out of San Diego. I don't know what the ECU situation is for that, but I would expect it's a reflash.
