Why are they that bad ? For a cheap startup car ... Considering ivebpaid £1400 for the whole car ?

Full_Tilt_Boogie 05-10-2015 03:46 PM

Search. Band-aids/piggybacks are bad.
Thats cool if you got it with the car, but go ahead and throw it in the trash and get something that works properly.

Such as megasquirt ? Aren't they OK for a starer setup until in want bigger power or am I better of running stock ecu with nothing else untill I get megasquirt etc ?

You cannot run stock ECU only with the turbo.

The PFC FCON is probably fine for low boost.

A little searching in this topic could have gone a long way.

This is a band-aid unit. It is only capable of so much compared to something such as a megasquirt or any full standalone. Like stated above you can run some very low boost and not have to worry too much, but it is extremely recommended you go standalone.

From my understanding with a band-aid is they cannot completely change fuel injection and specific mapping. You are stuck with purely adding, which again, for low boost you shouldn't be too worried about, but for the longevity of your engine its recommended to go standalone.

The f-con has knobs. They dont do anything.

I disagree strongly, but will not make the argument that they're a replacement for a good tuning solution.

The FCON itself also does not have knobs.

Am I thinking of the VPC?

whatever the case, it was pretty much pointless and did nothing better than I was able to achieve with a bipes/fmu combo.

VPC has knobs, yes. Believe it was available for 1.6, it's main purpose was to delete VAF/AFM/MAF.

The PFC FCON is a "headunit" only. There is an adjustable selector within for different maps, but if you want to play with knobs, you need to add something like a GCC or EGC, both of which have knobs that actually do things. Very rudimentary things, but they do things. (GCC trims/adds fuel -12%/+16% across set RPM points, then blends, EGC does similar things, but timing.)

Honestly, it was very powerful. In 1992.

I mean, you can make all these statements and that's cool, but i've actually, you know... used them. And still do.

My bumper was black with soot on stock ECU. As a matter of fact, the car runs LEANER in boost/open loop than it did in stock form. I like hanging around at a solid 12:1 to redline, instead of dipping into the 9s and gradually richening all the way to 10.1:1. Big improvement.

Again, would i use it on a Miata? Fuck no. Will i continue using it long term on the MX6? Probably not. There's literally nothing it does better than Megasquirt, besides festoon your cabin with lights and knobs. I'm simply saying that this was hot shit over 2 decades ago. :giggle: So hot that Millen used it on a few Pikes Peak cars.

With out the gcc controller u can not trim the excess fuel, the pfc unit has switches for different map settings, u select one that suits then trim fuel with the gcc, the PFC unit should come with a specific rom chip to suit the miata.

Or just buy a proper ecu instead of dabbling with fail and aidz
