knock\det detection

What ways do you guys use to detect and retard spark if knock\det is found?
I have a ms2 but I've heard hit or miss stories with the various implemenations for it.

So I decided to pickup a j&s safeguard as well.

Wondering if others use simmilar units or their standalone ecu's

Before that I used my ears and watched the oil pressure gauge.

Those det cans will tell you more than you can hear on a dyno or on the racetrack. You can even plug it into an MP3 player or phone and record the audio, listen to your entire session, and know if you're getting detonation or not, even the faint stuff that the naked ear can't hear.

You know, I've wondered if anyone would do that.

What I'd really like to see is someone with more time than myself sync it up to a datalog and watch it play through ala Pink Floyd/Wizard of Oz.

Does anyone have some recent audio recordings of knock?

Hard to do that when driving at WOT at 9 million mph with a 3" exhaust and a loudass turbo :(

I have a knocklite and also a hydra. Single knock sensor with the signal tee'd to the knocklite and the hydra. Hydra has a configurable noise threshold by RPM and will pull timing if noise is over the threshold. Also if it detects to many knock events (noise over threshold during a sample window) it will go to a limp dick timing map until key off and CEL will illuminate.

Knocklite is just for additional info and it does actually work but you need to calibrate it properly. It's also a spiffy shift light.

I also don't put electromagnetic fields near my brain. It disrupts my biological earth magnetic field sense organ and I end up flying west instead of south for the winter. Also, with these I definitely wouldn't be able to drive with my eyes closed- it would affect my sense of smell.

The needle moves in unnatural ways.

I'll be running a older GM(Saturn) knock sensor on AEM EMS once the car is running again.

hustler 03-08-2011 09:18 AM

Wolf EMS had some videos of det can audio on youtube but I can't find them anymore.

No. It's from some form of Nissan engine IIRC. Those files are bandpass filtered. If you use the chassis ears shown above you'll obviously get a lot more background noise than what you hear in the sounds files.

The Knock Box and Phormula's KS-series are the only two I know of that offer bandpass filtering for the audio outputs. The Phormula KS-4 also has a 0-5V output to integrate with a datalogger, which makes things very handy.
