Default 1,8 engine from 1999 into a 1992 Eunos

Hello forum, first question from me here.

A got a plan, but I need to know if and how to do execute it. So I need your help.
All inputs are appreciated.

I got a 1992 Mazda Eunos, or MX-5 or Miata. This got a oil consuming stock 1,6 engine and next to the car in my garage a 1,8 engine from 1999 stands, just waiting to replace the stock one.

Now I guess there is more than one way to do this and this is my idea, based on my resources.

Step one, I do a swap like FM describes, https://www.flyinmiata.com/tech/1.8_conversion.php
This is to get the car running, it won’t be optimal, but it would give me a driveable car.

Step two, I replace the stock ECU with a aftermarket one, so I can tune and bring more power to the wheels. A plug’n’play would be the easiest way to get up and running.

Step three, now I would like to put on the 1,8 throttle body, skipp the MAF, upgrade to full sequential fuel and ignition. As I understand, the 1,6 do fuel and ignition in batch.
Here I need to do so rewiring to get signal to injectors and coils, and the P’n’P needs to be able to be reconfigured to handle this.

Step four, Turbo?

Now, I know this is a complicated way and going to step 3 or 4 directly might be smarter.
My plan is based on that this is my first try on something like this and I don’t want this to be a project that gets my car stranded in my garage. Time and cash is short.
And this is what I came up with trying to use a P’n’P getting a easy car integration and not having to make new harness etc. that a stand alone ECU needs.

Now to clarify my questions:
Is it possible to do it as I think?
Step three, can this be done? And what P’n’P can handle it?

Or do you suggest another option?

I’m open to trying to understand how to do this with a stand alone ECU and I appreciate directions, ideas, links or ….

Tnx in advance.

Read a bunch more and buy a complete ms3x for your year of car.
My guess is that day might be a bit over your head at this point.
Otherwise, yes, it is a good idea to swap in the 1.8 first.

Swap the complete 1.8 including the throttle body (where did the idea of taking it off come from?). Implement a Megasquirt (pnp won't be good because you are swapping engines). You don't need or want sequential, by the way. It is superfluous.

Ok, so stand alone ECU, MS3 recommended.
Why by one for the year of my car and not one for the year of the engine?

The idea is from Flyin' Miata to be able to reuse the standard 1,6 ECU, and as a step towards a P'n'P update.
As I understand you also recommend a stand alone ECU.
Can you elaborate the "don't need or want sequential"?

So 2 out out 2 so far for going directly to a stand alone ECU.
Let's google that then.

Anyone in favour or a P'n'P solution?

Reusing the 1.6 ecu is a terrible idea for so many reasons. I'm not going to list them. Reusing anything from the 1.6 is a bad idea. Many advancements were made.

Sequential will require additional custom wiring and will only make a slight difference at low rpms. It matters none at high revs.

There's no pnp solution because what you are doing is custom. Stop thinking that way. It doesn't work that way.
