Need help setting rev limiter on FM kit
 

Hi all, I am a complete and utter noob. The previous owner had the FM turbo kit installed around 2018 and was tuned at Flyin Miata on gas and then later at a local shop for E85. This car has been largely put together by professionals so all's well and good with the performance. However, I noticed that there doesn't seem to be a rev limiter. I can rev to 8k and probably beyond without getting stopped by anything. As this is a stock engine, I'd like to prevent that from happening again and play it on the safe side. I want to set a rev limiter in the Hydra ECU but opening up the Nemesis 2.7 software and going through the menus is a little daunting. Can someone guide me through setting a rev limiter at a safe value? If anyone has screenshots, that'd be great. And if I'm missing relevant details, let me know.

After loading the Nemesis 2.7, click on settings, then click on base ignition settings. You'll find the rev limiter there. The base FM maps used 7488 for Hard Rev Limit and 7296 for Soft Rev Limit. If you don't have the base maps, download them or PM me and I'll email what I have. It's good to compare as FM's base maps seem to have really good from what I've read.

On my soon to be replaced Nemesis 2.6, I used the base map to compare to what looked like a totally custom tune on my MSM that's seen and survived track racing by two previous owners. I was able to tweak the idle and start settings for faster start as well as lean out the stumbling, spitting rich fuel settings. For the most part it runs really well almost never stalling unless A/C and lights are on after a hot restart. With a 10# flywheel it's a bit harder to catch and RPM dips a bit when the radiator fans come on but is otherwise stable. If you can, it's great to load your tune on a laptop and the base map on a desktop or HTPC so you can directly compare instead of flipping back on forth on one screen. Can the Nemesis program be launched twice or do you have to load the other tune each time in one Nemesis program instance? I can have two running simultaneously but it's nice to have two separate screens.

I have an NB2 as well with an FM turbo kit. Dyno tuning shows me torque is falling and power is flat-lining above 6900RPM in my car so I have the soft limit set at 6912RPM and the hard limit at 7168RPM. Soft limit reduces ignition advance to make the engine loose power. Hard limits shuts off the engine. Finding this setting is easy. from the menu chose Settings and then Base Ignition Settings.

If I'm able to access it, I should be able to change the value, right?

It's weird that the hard rev limit is 7,552 but when I hit that rpm, nothing will happen. Is it because the soft limiter is 9,408?

Time for a complete retune, my guy. Any map that shows dumb crap like that immediately makes me suspicious of the whole thing.

The unfortunate part is you'll need whomever locked it to give you the unlock.

It is a reputable shop as far as I know. I called them but they said they don't give out the passwords. I eventually got in touch with the previous owner and he provided me a copy of the tune, which allowed me to see everything.

I'm not sure if the current tune on my car is corrupt or something but if I load the backup copy of the tune, the rev limit values are completely different and the same as the base FM map. Anyone know if a locked tune will show inaccurate values for the rev limits than an unlocked one? Or perhaps my current tune is just completely corrupt?

What he probably provided you with is the FM base map. The shop's tune is probably different, and they're holding your ECU hostage. You need the password.

He needs a new tuner. Any tuner who locks the customer out of their ECU is not worth using. I fucking hate the whole concept of locking tunes.

It's not the base tune though. PO gave me 2 different tunes and the final tune was fixing some boost issues.

I wonder if the tune currently on my car is corrupt or something as the rev limits aren't working. When I connect to the ECU you can see the header bar of that window is all gibberish.

The car was tuned by Steve at PRT Performance near Dallas. From my searches, people seem to say he's a reputable tuner. Though PRT wasn't very helpful when I called at all.
